...of all the rare and valuable ones I have...I still thinking finding "wheat" pennies is my favorite thing and lucky too. Though I did also recently find a Buffalo Nickle in some change from the store, that was pretty exciting.

I had a roll of Susan B. Anthony dimes, several silver dollars from the 1880s, a $2 gold certificate, and a few other odds and ends that were given to my dad by his dad before he passed on, with the intention that they be passed to the male child to be born under our family name after my dad got married (his older brother died, when my dad was very young, and my grandad, who passed the coins along, was really concerned with making sure our family name wasn't lost, so when I was born, it was a big deal). Unfortunately, I never met that granddad, as he passed before I was born, and even more unfortunately, when our house was robbed by some dumb teenagers several years back (I was probably 5th grade, I think), those particular items were on the list of things which were never recovered after they found the burglars.

That's a shame. One of my most prized coins I own is a Union Penny that has actually been passed down from generation to generation from one of my relatives who fought for the North.

I just really hope they didn't go out and use Susan Bs or the dollars as just currently circulating cash, but that's almost certainly giving them way too much credit. Considering these guys pulled a Wet Bandits kind of thing (as in, they would burglarize, and also vandalize, in a town of 1400 people in rural Eastern Wyoming, where they'd almost certainly be caught), I don't have much faith in that, both because they're dumb for doing that sort of crime in that small a town, and because I doubt they were bright enough to tell think to themselves "Oh, hey, these are old...maybe they're worth more than just a dime."

I'm thinking about putting away one bill for each amount they come in. When I was little there were 1 dollar and 2 dollar bills here. Not anymore now we have the loonie and the toonie with word of getting a 5 dollar coin in the future.
thing is. I'd have to put away 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar bills. It would be hard for me to think I have $185 just sitting around on the days I need cash.
But on the topic of coin collection. I have a book that has a whole bunch of slots for pennies that were made in each year from 1900 - 2000 I have a fair amount of the book filled but some of the coins are almost impossible to find. like one I need is a dove penny with pointed beads around the edge. I've never seen one in all my life.
I'm talking about Canadian money by the way.

If you collect 100 coins, do you get an extra life?

Funny how those things are a different color, yet still work in those automatic change machines a lot of gas stations have now. And btw, I hated the Loonies and Toonies when I'd party up in Canada...the last thing you want when you're drunk is a whole pocket full of change.

I used to be an avid coin collector too. Oldest coin is probably a large cent from around the 1850's. Still collect the proof sets the U.S. mint releases every year.

I'm no coin collector but I do like getting the odd ones at random. Wheat pennies are nice but my faves are bicentennial quarters. Then again, they keep changing the designs so often now that you think you got a cool coin when it's really just a new design and they're everywhere.
My favorite coin that I found was when I was a paperboy, someone paid with what they thought was a dime, turned out it was a five cent piece from Zimbabwe. From a distance, they look exactly like dimes.

Yeah, that stinks. Either my bro or his ex-gf stole my small collection of oddball coins. There was less than a dollar worth of coins there and they were probably worth $1, maybe $2 total to a pawn shop. It just annoyed me, because one was a Liberty nickel that I found in my grandfather's yard. They only made those a few short years in the early 20th century. This one was a 1912 and in awful shape as it had probably been in the yard for years. Then one day after a rain storm, I found it laying in the grass, poking up from some mud. I've since restarted and now have a buffalo nickel that's too worn to read any date, a "modern" style nickel from 1947, six wheatback pennies and then two bi-centennial quarters and a JFK half dollar from '74. (I know bi-centennial quarters are worthless as are the half dollars pretty much, but I hate spending JFK half dollars and usually save a couple bi-centennials.) My local Salvation Army has provided me with at least half of those wheatback pennies. I guess whatever change they find in stuff, they throw in the register. My dad has some pennies from the 1880's-1890's set back that my great, great grandfather had saved in a jar. Apparently they counted them and there was just enough for the great, great grandchildren so it was decided to give them to us. He did a random drawing and I got the newest, 1898 I think, but it's in the best condition. I also have at least $10 worth of $2 bills by now. Two relatives gave each of my siblings and I one for our birthday. Then I got at least three more from friends who didn't want to spend them. One friend always asked for largest bills on his paycheck, so he ended up with at least one and then usually a half dollar and would give them to me as he considered them bad luck for some reason. I spent most of those though.

I suppose I should state that I'm not a collector. The stuff that was stolen was kept because they were family heirlooms, not because I'm terribly interested. Nothing against those who do dig this, but thought that I would clarify.
Still, anyone in the know had to be impressed if they got one of those Susan B. Anthony dimes in their change after those idiots likely used them as regular dimes.

A lot of people were putting them in vending machines.

When I used to manage a restaurant and balance the tills, I'd sometimes run across a Mercury head dime, either alloy or silver, and the occasional silver quarter, and it would always be because they made a different noise when they were dropped into the till while I was counting. I'd always have to get change for a dollar and pick them up every time I saw them. None of them are in really good condition, but it's a conversation piece, and something to show my son when he's old enough to appreciate it.

I have real Confederate money that has been passed down to me. That is my ultimate. I have coins from early 1900s all the way to today. I work in accounting at a store and anytime unique coins come through, I buy them out. I love having old coins or bills.

I have a tiny coin collection, mostly consisting of various coins from overseas that a great-aunt happened to keep around. My favorite is one that I found, though: a coin from Zimbabwe. It's about the size of a quarter, and I found it while counting the money in my register before work when I was a cashier.
And I, too, enjoy collecting wheat pennies.

I collect old coins and foreign coins when I come across them. Nothing really valuable though. My best find was a Roman penny. Dude was counting out pennies to buy a pack of smokes where I worked, came across this really tore up one and sat it off to the side. Just left it. I looked and it had a Roman emperor on it instead of Lincoln.

I've got a lot of stuff from other countries, including some Saddam era Iraqi coins with his face on them that I "found" in Iraq.
I am in the process of finding all the special 2009 Lincoln pennies on my own. I like finding them on my own, rather than buying them. So far I have two of the four.
