All right, we've had a best thread, let's go the other route now.
For me, being a Star Trek fan back when these shows were on: both Tasha Yar from TNG and Jadzia Dax from DS9's deaths seemed pointless (even though they were necessary, due to their actresses leaving)

When I saw the thread title, Tasha and Jadzia were pretty much the first two that came to mind. But at least they redeemed Tasha's death with the excellent Yesterday's Enterprise. Jadzia had no such luck.

This may be up for debate (is it really a death, etc...) but I have to say:
SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!
Tony Soprano at the end of the series. If he is dead, I don't like the way it was handled.

Lost spoilers.
Mr. Eko. The actor who played Eko didnt't like living in Hawaii and the writers had to kill his character off. It seemed like there were big things ahead for Mr. Eko, but it wasn't meant to be.

The Lone Gunmen just a few episodes before X-Files ended. Their deaths were pointless and unnecessary. I think the only reason they killed them was because their spin-off failed so badly.

Omar from the Wire. It was just so WTF and pointless. I mean it served the script I guess in the long run but it definately did not serve the fans.

Actually that's pretty much *the* reason why they were killed I'd have to say: {Spoiler}Lawrence Kuttner last season of House. I know the character had to be written out somehow, but the way it was done was so jarring that the unexpectedness made it more of a "wtf" than a sad moment. Marissa Cooper in The OC is up there too. It was more of a "meh" than a

Poochie's death touched me the most. I've always been sensitive toward people dying during intergalactic travel.

The thing is, The Lone Gunmen's spinoff didn't even do that badly. It was pulling in solid numbers for the demographic in the Friday night timeslot The X-Files debuted in. However, whereas The X-Files was nurtured until it was a hit, this was the era of Fox that canceled everything that wasn't an immediate ratings success (see Family Guy and Futurama).
But yeah, they couldn't even give the characters a happy ending. They had them catch a horrible, flesh-eating disease and die together. But they saved lives or whatever, and got buried in Arlington, so I guess it's supposed to be "bittersweet."
Actually, The X-Files should just win this thread, because they killed off all of their great characters haphazardly. Deep Throat was fine, because it gave us Mr. X, but then they killed him off! Not to mention the Cigarette Smoking Man (who they brought back in the finale to kill off again), all of the Elders, the entirety of Mulder and Scully's families, Krycek, et al.

George's fiancee Susan from "Seinfeld". I understand writing her out, because they couldn't have the character get married, but it was just so stupid the way she was killed and the characters' blase reaction to the news made them look more sociopathic than self-absorbed. Not funny at all.
I was disappointed the way Sherriff Lamb from "Veronica Mars" died too.

Curtis on 24. They had spent 2 season building the guy up as almost on par with Jack Bauer, then pointlessly kill him a few episodes into the awful Season 6.
