Or is familiar with the area? I'm asking this because I've been giving a lot of thought to pulling up stakes from NY and moving down there, as it has struck me as being one of the better cities to live in for culture and entertainment. It would also put me closer to my girlfriend, who lives in Arizona. So I wanted to get some feedback from people who were living there as far as things like rent and taxes and transportation.
So...show of hands?

Going from the upper edges of the US all the way down to Texas? Oh man.... Hope you enjoy melting your ass off. Texas has 6 types of weather: - Hot - Really Hot - Dude, It's f***ing Hot, OK? - Rain - 2 days of snow - Tornadoes Incidentally, the weather in Oklahoma is just like that, except we get 3 days of snow and a few more tornadoes than Texas does. And I've been to Austin once. It was a nice place. Really freaking huge. Dunno bout costs. If you want a cheap city to live in though, pick any place in Oklahoma. One of the lowest costs of living in the nation, and some of the cheapest gas in the nation, too. And, if you want to take a visit to Texas, it is only a few hours away.

My brother lives there. Cost of living is comparable to most midwestern cities. I wore shorts on Thanksgiving there once. And it's a college town.

In some towns, everything there is to do is on campus(like Norman, Oklahoma), but Austin is one of the college towns that is really just a major city that happens to have a major college in it, so there are things to do outside of the campus.

I don't live there, but I do know of austin enough to give a basic run-down of it.
For a town in texas it's an extremely hipster type of town. It's home to one of the best comic book stores in the country (austinbooks.com) as well as one of the best movie theaters in the country (drafthouse.com).
As far as bars go, there are a bunch but I would stay away from 6th street as that's where most of the CUH-RAAAAAYZE college bars are, as well as the CUH-RAAAAAYZE college cops.
Finally, don't ride a bike too much, that crap will get stolen.

My dad is working on a hospital there and I go down a lot. Awesome town. Look for one of the towns surrounding the city for cheaper living. Georgetown is maybe an 35 minutes to an hour north but, is much cheaper.
Traffic is an absolute bitch without football season and during it, it's worse.
There is public transportation but, I don't know much about it.
There is no state income tax but, we have higher property taxes to counter.
Weather is hot in summer (duh) but mild most other times. They are in the middle of a bad drought right now though.

Screw that noise Chainsaw come to the DFW area, Fort Worth is amazing. Sorry, man, Austin's where my heart is. And the Drafthouse is one of the primary reasons why. I can live with being in a hipster college town after living in the dump that is Albany.

I live in SA but I love Austin. The two cities are completely different, though. Austin is very hipster-like, and it's more of a melting pot for different types of lifestyles. But...it's way more expensive. The cost is the main reason I prefer SA.

There is the Dallas Stars AHL team in the area so if you like Hockey you can keep watching.
Plenty of AA and AAA baseball in the area
If you like walking around naked there is Hippie Hollow
Honestly try to find a place to live that is not Austin proper. You are going to be driving everywhere anyways might as well have lower renters/mortage.
If you want the best of both worlds(SA and Austin) look at San Marcos/ New Braunsfuls
