So I was thinking about this today, and it seems like video games are going the way of 3D (for however long 3D can stay interesting that is). So my question is, if 3D fails what happens with video games after that? I don't know how much graphics can really improve anymore (I know that gets said when every game system is released, but the PS3 and 360 are amazing) so what happens next? I'm kind of hoping for virtual reality games myself, ones that would work better than the virtual boy, although I'm sure they would be very expensive.
So what's next for the video game world?

I don't think they'll all go 3D. Really, the equipment is still expensive enough that it won't be feasible for every gamer to have a 3D setup (then again, I heard the same thing about HD and a lot of developers are making that a requirement).
I think advances will, for a long while, gear towards making games bigger and faster, even if the graphic improvements are slight. I think we'll see load times begin to decrease drastically and games get bigger with more to do.

My guess is that it'll focus mostly on getting stuff working as fast as possible on internet connections. MW2 was pretty much sold on the back of the MP.
Physics is also a big thing this generation. Having a huge bridge or something collapse around you with cars and people flying everywhere in real time would be pretty spectacular. This gen has seen bits and pieces here and there but I think it'll be the next generation before we see proper physics on a massive scale.

Less games relying on infodumps, learning ways to tell a narrative through gameplay. Like Shadow of the Colossus or Portal.

Honestly? It'll either go 3D or motion controls. HOWEVER, either way it goes, the traditional game pad will still be around for a long time. I actually doubt a traditional controller will never die out.
And as for graphics? You bet your ass they can improve. I mean have you see the screens and video demos of the CryEngine 3? It makes Uncharted 2 look like ass! SERIOUSLY! Graphics can get better. Until we are able to truly recreate real life visuals and effects, graphics can always improve.
And yeah, the Star Trek holo deck will eventually come into being, hundreds of years down the road, though. None of us will be alive to see it.

Oh, and I'd expect to see Augmented Reality become bigger. Especially on handhelds.

Realistic Physics, and completely interactive environments would be the next logical step.
I imagine we'll eventually play games that will deliver what Red Faction started, in that every single little brick and bush in the world around you can be destroyed, or manipulated with realistic cause and effect.
For example, if I blow up the wall of a house, the house doesn't explode. But the wall will be destroyed, and part of the house may collapse depending on the damage done.
I've played lots of games that look real, the next logical step is a game that truly feels real.

By the way, where is head tracking right now? Hasn't Sony figured out how to do it without goofy glasses? The downside with that though is it only works with one person, unless there's some other way?

Yeah, I want to see things realistically fall apart in real time. The ONLY times I've seen things fall apart brick by brick, for example, were in scripted events, meaning the developers themselves took the time to make it fall apart brick by brick. I want it to where these things can fall apart without it being a scripted event.
I think the closest I've seen were the Red Faction games or Fracture. However, Fracture was more of just manipulating the terrain mapping, and even then you could only do preset moves like cause a spike of earth to shoot up, create a hole, or form a boulder. As for the RF titles, they too had restrictions on the total destruction aspect, but are the closest we have right now.

I really hope you're right for the first one, because I actually don't like either of those. For the second part, I had not before and holy crap, those are amazing. For the games that rely on being as closed to realistic as possible (shooters and such), that is a big improvement. That said, I think right now we see graphics improvements like a hill. They used to increase leaps and bounds, but they're beginning to slow down a little.

None of us will be alive to see it. sorry but i think that technology will be around sooner than that. a couple of break throughs in certain technological feilds could easily bring it about sooner than people think. as an example look at mobile phones, inspired in certain ways by the 60's trek series.

A holodeck is pretty much a really bitching virtual reality system. We need virtual reality first, we aren't even close to that yet. We are just getting around to the basic building blocks of VR game, what with motion controls and using camera based controllers. At this rate it'll take at least 20 years for basic fundamental VR is truly available to the mass market, if not longer. Until we get VR we won't get a holodeck.

I watched a vid on the CryEngine and I'll have to retract my statement about graphics for sure, they can improve. Also a holodeck would really, really be cool to see, I don't know if it's realistic anytime soon but technology never ceases to amaze me, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw it some 20-30 years down the road.

I just want more than 1 or 2 games where I can open that friggin' wooden door that requires the purple dragon's key with my god damned rocket launcher.
That, and AI improvements that just don't make enemies magically hit you 100% of the time and have cheating Health/Speed/Stats. I'm talking hiding, stalking, retreating and stuff. Not just jump to the side once and roll over dead. But then the AI would take over the world and keep sending Robots back in time to destroy Chuck Norris.
To bad they picked the wrong God to $@(% with.

star trek style holodeck. Porn Industry will own the entire world if this tech gets invented. Then the Porn Industry would take after the Video Game Industry and offer DLC. Sure, you can get Nurse Megan Fox for 50$, but each Nipple with cost 15$ at the DLC store and you have to pay an extra 25$ for each orifice you want to use.

Yeah, I'm still not sold on 3D, at least yet. Sony's apparently the only one that's really working on it from what I've heard. Right now the technology is there, but there's supposedly nauseating side effects. Plus the idea of playing through a 8+ hour video game compared to a 2 hour movie...
I definitely think it will have it's niche for some games like say Hard Rain or Alan Wake or even a Dead Space type game. But your average game series like Halo, CoD, FF I don't think need it and there are still far better places to direct attention.
