I don't like or hate Cena, but I do not understand why he generates so much emotion from the fans. To his credit, he was improving at one point but now he seems to be getting worse as a wrestler so if he appears and it's not something I care about I just change the channel. While he may do a lot of charity stuff, I see that as more of a civic duty kind of thing so I do not understand why he gets more praise for it than other wrestlers do. People talk about how hard he works and that is admirable but it does not seem to transfer to what I see on TV. He's a company man but he comes off as a stooge in interviews at times. Some think that when I say these things that means I hate Cena but I haven't hated a wrestler in years. I've realized that instead of doing that I'm better off just focusing on what I do enjoy.

I hate Cena's character and how it hasn't gone through any bit of change in over five years, I don't dislike the performer. He can put on great matches with people other than HBK, see his match with Umaga at Royal Rumble.

Only heard good stuff about him backstage. I've heard a few people complain about him in shoot interviews, but Sabu's the only one I can remember at the moment. He said Cena was afraid of taking bumps, and would basically whine to Vince and get people into trouble. Kennedy made some veiled references about him being a politicker, as well.

To be fair, we can only imagine some of the bumps Sabu wanted to try. Cena probably had to put his foot down to prolong his career. Sabu is in every single botchamania video for a reason.

I remember those years when people would take guesses beforehand as to how the crowd would react to Cena when he was performing in the main event. It seemed like this crowd loved him and then the crowd at the next pay per view hated him. 2005 was when he won his first title. You give someone a belt and now the fans have to decide whether they like this guy as a champ or not. It seemed like a phase for the fans in deciding what to think of him. The crowds were split at pay per views. Now or days fans are indifferent to him at times. He has many fans and yet many detractors. I think alot of people just realized that this is who WWE wants in their main event and that's that. Like him or not If I buy a ticket to a RAW show I'll probably have to see him.
I don't care for the John Cena character but I'm content to take it because I can't do anything about it. I'm just a plain old wrestling fan with no say.
This is a good thread by the way. It has a good topic for discussion.

I like Cena but I hate his gimmick. He hardly even has a gimmick. If they are just going to have him wrestle in urban clothes and not let him rap what is the point? Put him back into the freaking biker shorts speedos.
Also I don't understand why people don't like his wrestling ability. He is a big guy in the WWE. He does power moves. Just like Hogan did power moves in WWF in the 80s. Why don't people complain about Hogan? Because he is a good wrestler as proven from his matches from Japan? Well Cena in his first year in WWE wrestled his ass off before any one started to complain about him.
People can complain about his gimmick and how he is booked but attacking his wrestling and the way he does it is like attacking HHH for not being a luchador.

I say for now let's all agree that some like him, and some hate him. Though I'm glad this is still civil.
