I personally thought it was kind of odd for one reason. It truely came off that neither of these guys respects or likes the guy they are working with. In other heel/face pairings you had Monsoon/Heenan, McMahon/Ventura, and the most recent JR/Lawler. Both would take shots at the other guy, heck sometimes Monsoon would even threaten physical violence, but there were times when Monsoon had a hard time not laughing and just called Heenan an idiot, with all of these pairings it was a love/hate relationship. It really seems with these two that they don't respect each other. Matthews sounded like he cringed when Cole brough up "Tough Enough" and Matthews sounded like he truely believed what he said when he told Cole, "You don't know about alot of things." It really seems like Matthews can't stand Cole's lack of wrestling knowledge and skill, and Cole doesn't appreciate Matthews, the new guy, thinking that he knows more than Cole. Maybe I just bought into it too much or they sold it that well, but this seems like genuine hatred and not just a heel/face announce team that disagree on things.

It's just like the show they're on. You have the "I know it all and there's no one that can tell me otherwise" 'pro' in Cole and the "earnest willing to give everyone a fair shot" 'rookie' in Matthews. If they legitimately hated each other then I doubt they'd be sitting there at the table together. They're just doing their jobs well enough to give the fans at home two dynamics to choose from.

I don't see why they couldn't have kept Saxton as the heel announcer personally. He was doing a good job I thought.

I don't see why they couldn't have kept Saxton as the heel announcer personally. He was doing a good job I thought. Like said a couple posts up, they wanted an announcer that understood where the veterans are coming from, and one that understood the rookies. Byron would probably have made a little more sense for the "rookie" role, but Josh is way better than him and has yet to graduate to one of the big shows as a commentator, so still can pull off "rookie".

Besides, I really think Cole completely hates the IWC, so it's perfect for him. It will just be wierd to see him go back to face on Raw. Also isn't it kind of strange, considering Cole brought up the fact that Daniel Bryan had more wrestling experience than the Miz on Raw, yet just discredited him on NXT?

I loved this. It's like their own rookie/veteran feud to add into the broadcast booth. Glad they got rid of that Sexton guy I thought he sucked.

Byron Saxton did suck
Plus Josh Matthews got his WWE job because a show like this, so it makes sense that he gets the role. Cole is the longest tenured announcer on the WWE Roster. On TV nonstop since 99 at least, never been fired or quit (Lawler), never been taken off TV or suffered an illness (JR)

@joeystyles I'm an internet fan and I can assure you that the exchange between Josh Mathews and Michael Cole was very real. Cole lives in the WWE bubble

I actually think it should be Lawler-Matthews. Lawler is obviously the most experienced commentator, and definitely plays a better heel role than Cole. In fact, he would be perfect heel commentator for Bryan given his history of repeatedly referring to ECW as a Bingo Hall.

While Lawler no doubt can play a great heel, I don't think he has as much reason as Cole to be quite so blatantly anti-rookie and anti IWC. Lawler takes a lot of trash online, but still gets a certain amount of respect from the fans, while Cole has never had any. For him to then go off on these young punks who think they are already stars while he hasn't earned respect in 13 years makes a lot of sense.

Is Cole the Play-by-Play announcer or the Color commentator, because I can't remember a time when there's been a heel Play-by-Play man.

Either Cole really is the worst commentator of all time, and has no control over his emotions, or this is the best work pulled on us in forever, because SO MANY people are pissed about it everywhere on the internet.
And that's great. I love that Cole can do that, and is getting a chance to after years of hatred for not really doing anything wrong.
