AFTER 18 DAYS IN RELEASE, WWE'S THE MARINE FINALLY GROSSES MORE THAN SEE NO EVIL by Buck Woodward @ 2:00:00 PM on 11/1/2006
As of October 30th, The Marine has grossed $15,550,272 after 18 days in release. For those who are curious, the film has dropped substantially since the opening weekend, which was responsible for almost half of the total gross so far.
The weekend the film opened (October 13th), the film was shown in 2,545 theatres, and pulled in $7,138,774, allowing the movie to finish at sixth for the weekend. The following weekend (October 20th), the film remained in the same number of theatres, but saw revenue drop by almost half, taking in only $3,795,160 for the weekend and a ninth place finish. This past weekend (October 27th) the film only ran in 1,868 theatres and pulled in $1,885,388, finishing 15th. With the holiday movie season about to kick in, the number of theatres carrying the Marine will likely be reduced greatly this coming weekend.
See No Evil, WWE Film's summer horror release starring Kane, pulled in $15,387,513 in total grosses, with $15,032,800 coming domestically. However, when you compare the amount of promotion the two films received (and the fact that Marine had a much larger production budget), WWE has to be disappointed that after three weekends, only now has The Marine managed to surpass the horror flick

You know both movies would have prolly done better being released at the proper time, ie The Marine during summer action movie time and See No Evil released in October.
It should be out on DVD by January

i haven't seen The Marine and prolly won't. But I liked "See No Evil" and wish it would done better. I'm willing to bet DVD sales will be really good. People nowadays instead of spending $10 to see a movie in the theater can spend $12 and own the thing and watch it anytime they want.

That honestly does surprise me that the Marine made more then See No Evil. Still, See No Evil cost less to do. You know, this WWE Films thing doesn't seem to be the smartest financial venture, saying the WWE lost money on the Marine, and barely passed the production cost for See No Evil.

I'm surprised it did as well as it has. It didn't last long in theatres near my house after the first 2 weeks it was gone.

Shouldn't they have switched those dates so The Marine could come out in May and See No Evil in October?

I don't think the Marine has done too horribly. An almost 50 percent drop after the first weekend is completely normal, and along the same lines of what Gridiron Gang did. A lot of movies drop more than that. Also, if you believe IMDB.com, the Marine only cost about 15 million to make. It is going to end up being less profitable than See No Evil, but profitable none the less.
And I don't actually think that a movie has to double its production costs in order to make a profit. Actually, relatively few movies are able to do that. I remember movie websites talking about Snakes on a Plane being profitable after it passed its 30 million dollar budget. I also remember reading somewhere that theatres don't get any of the ticket money (or only pennies on the dollar, if they do), but make their money some other way. I can't say that with 100 percent certainty, but I think I'm right.
So, say it is a horrible movie if you want. (It probably is, and I never bothered to see it) but you can't really call it a collosal failure, if you're looking at it from an unbiased perspective.

From a financial standpoint the Marine is still very much a failure.
Also, in a correction from yesterday, The Marine actually cost $23 million to make, not including advertising costs. Several movie websites say that it cost $15 million to make, but The Wrestling Observer is reporting that it actually cost $23 million. The movie would need to generate at least $25-30 million in domestic ticket revenue, and then pick up another $15-20 million in DVD sales and international ticket revenue, or else it could turn out be a huge money loser for World Wrestling Entertainment.
