Do you think commercials are more sexist towards men or women? I'd have to say it's split down the middle, and making a case for sexism towards men, I give you case A.
All the girls are checking him out, and then boom! suddenly he becomes repulsive and everybody is disgusted with the fat guy.
Maybe sexist isn't the word I'm looking for, but you know what I mean, so are commercials more sexist towards dudes or chicks?

Definitely men. There are some commercials with men being attacked by women. I remember one where there's a couple driving and the woman pushes him out of the car. I remember another christmas one where men have been impaled with household objects because they bought their wives bad gifts. Another one was from JC penny I think where the man bought his wife a vaccum cleaner and was sent to the "doghouse." These ads are irritating to the point where if I were married to any of these types of women my gift to them would be a steaming piece of dog shit.
Oh and the idiot husband, genius wife sitcom archetype is also used a lot. I remember one ad for cheerios I think, as well as some other one.

Men.
Sure you might have a sexy woman, but when do you see them making the husband commit acts of violence or straight demean her?

From the majority of commercials I've seen, I tend to lean towards sexist towards women

Brian Regan did a hilarious and accurate joke about ads that make the husband look like the dumbest person you've ever known. The quality isn't too great, but it gets the point across

Without question men. This can even go for movies and television as well. If I got a penny for every time I see a man being portrayed as a fat, self-depreciating, effeminate sad-sack in the media I'd be richer then Bill Gates.

Women. Our whole society in general is more sexist towards women. 9 out of 10 ads featuring women involved them doing their make-up/hair and/or cleaning. How inspiring.

Well it depends, if the ad is to sell make-up or hair care products that's going to be a given. And cleaning if that is what the product is aiming for than that is a given as well. I will agree that ads are sexist towards women, but I for one am tired of seeing the dumbass husband Harvard graduate wife commercials, and you know DAMN well if it was the other way around there would be media outrage. By the way not ranting at you, just in general. Didn't want it to seem like I was getting at you and singling you out.

It is sexist toward men. Ads paint the picture that only women eat yogurt. And we all know that ain't true, is it Michael Westen? "Bitches be crazy if they think they're the only ones who eat yogurt." Thanks Michael.

Depends who the product is marketed to, products 'for women' are sexist against men, ones 'for men' are sexist against women. Though the whole targetting of products like that is sexist in itself for the most parts, like men will never want or need cleaning products and women will never drink beer.

I think it's right down the middle as well. Most food ads targeted to women treat eating like a crime. Most food ads targeted to men treat eating, especially eating hearty, as a civic duty. Overall, I think it all boils down to perception and if you choose to notice the sexism in commercials.

This is a great sketch about the different ways the two sexes are targeted by advertising.

Neither sex looks all that great in most commercials. The goal of most ads are to push the product in a humorous way, not to uplift the honor of a specific gender by deriding the other.
On one side, you've got a slew of cleaning commercials and insurance ads where the woman figures out what needs to be done before their dopey husband. On the other side, there's every single beer commercial ever. So I'll say everyone looks equally bad.

I hate those broadview security commercials where it is always a woman alone or with her child when someone comes breaking through the door. I happen to think that there are many men who would run and scream like a sissy if someone kicked in their door. But nooooo, in those commercials it's always a woman who gets preyed on, and I think that's sexist.

I hate commericials in the daytime from Vagisil about women and their problems "down there".
However, to say I'm not a hypocrite, I'm not a fan of any commericial that involves ED (and no, we're not talking about a horse).

It seems like almost every commercial I see nowadays portrays the man as some sort of retard while the woman is a damn genius. Really gets irritating after a while.

I'll give one group credit. One company did show the woman as the idiot in one of their life insurance ads. Husband is trying to figure out his to-do list and gets to getting life insurance, and the wife goes "Life insurance? Easy!?" in one of the hammiest performances I've seen in a life insurance commercial.

It's not so much about sexism per se as using sexist stereotypes to sell a product. I'd say its about 50/50 in terms of commercials.
As for sitcoms, most are sexist only towards men and always portray guys as dumb cavemen. Which wouldn't be a problem if the female characters were given obnoxious traits as well to add balance. Usually, they are not.

Unless I see an add that treats spousal abuse against women as lighthearted, laugh-out-loud, oh-so-true fun, I think I know what my answer is.
