I really don't like TVTROPES. It tries too hard to pigeonhole every character from popular shows, even those that straddle genre, and I weep when I hear of writers using it to come up with characters. Whatever happened to imagination and creativity? Ok...rant over....return to your normal thread... Imagination and creativity are still there. Nothing new under the sun, and it's not as if TV tropes invented archetypes, or writers going to archetypes to fill out a cast. That's why I don't really mind it myself. The intentions, if not the execution, is sound. The internet is a powerful communications device, so to create a wiki with the sole purpose of identifying and classifying media tropes is bound to advance it, but one cannot expect all submitters to be academics. And besides, with all of the articles and identified works, you never know what new things that you may find.

Oh I know that, it's just I know a few writers who are genuinely talented who have totally changed or dropped a story totally just because of Tropes saying a character was already done or overdone etc. I guess it's people putting too much stock in it as opposed to the site itself. anybody serious about their craft as a writer doesn't drop something just because "Simpsons did it".

I can't stand TVTropes. While listing various archetypes and story conventions isn't a bad thing in itself, their execution leaves a lot to be desired. 98% of the articles come off very smug and obnoxious. as a fan of the site, my problem has to do with redundancy. every slight variation on an existing trope just HAS TO have its own page, no matter how specific or irrelevant a difference it is.

I have been recently beating some fellow writers over the head with that mantra because they have done just that. These are published writers too.

Every time, when I have a bit of free time and have nothing to do, I think to myself "well, I have twenty minutes to kill... guess I'll check the updates on TV Tropes, but IU'll just check ONE page." Three hour laters, I realize I forgot to do whatever I was supposed to after the twenty minutes.

I'm leaning towards doytch as The Woobie No, no, no, no. He's the Cloud Cuckoo Lander. He's a bit of all that, with some Alas, Poor Scrappy thrown in for good measure. Also, I'm confused as to what makes some people find the articles smug or obnoxious. If anything, it tends to be a lot LESS obnoxious than most websites, IMO (for example, it's one of the few websites I've seen that has a wrestling section that is used for something other than bitching about WWE and TNA while praising how great indy wrestling is and how it's the only thing "real" fans should be interested in).

What would be the WCF's Crowning Moment of Awesome then? The "Moon" thread? "Pattie Mayonnaise is a Lesbian" maybe? Or some of the more epic Photoshop threads.
