Ah, TV Tropes. One of the most marvelously evil inventions ever in the way of how it can completely consume your time and ruin your life in the best way possible.

I really don't like TVTROPES. It tries too hard to pigeonhole every character from popular shows, even those that straddle genre, and I weep when I hear of writers using it to come up with characters. Whatever happened to imagination and creativity?
Ok...rant over....return to your normal thread...

I like that almost every reference to Sanger Zonvolt is made with a SWORD THAT CLEAVES EVILLLLLLLLLLLLL.
So, yeah, I love that site. Although I don't get caught as much as other in it. Usually 2 hours is my max there.

I, too, suffer from TVtropes addiction. it's even invaded my vocabulary.
on the plus side, it also introduced me to a bunch of cool books/films/shows I wouldn't have heard of otherwise.

Nothing new under the sun, and it's not as if TV tropes invented archetypes, or writers going to archetypes to fill out a cast.

Oh I know that, it's just I know a few writers who are genuinely talented who have totally changed or dropped a story totally just because of Tropes saying a character was already done or overdone etc. I guess it's people putting too much stock in it as opposed to the site itself.

Tv tropes is basically a snarkier version of CliffsNotes. It can be amusing to a certain extent, but don't expect indepth analysis or unbiased opinions of the stuff it covers.

I can't stand TVTropes. While listing various archetypes and story conventions isn't a bad thing in itself, their execution leaves a lot to be desired. 98% of the articles come off very smug and obnoxious.

I generally like the site but my main complaint is that too many of the article names are esoteric and/or idiosyncratic - the names are far too often not detached from the works that contain them. For instance, Narm describes an already well known literary device called Bathos. To continue calling it, "Narm," is a mark of intellectual laziness IMO. My other complaint, and it's kind of petty, but... has anyone notice that the grand majority of examples come from either Anime/Manga or Video Games? I'm just saying... /get off my lawn. //I'm 24, BTW.
