Well, I think Marvel had the Star Trek license at that point, or was owned by Paramount at some point. It wasn't a very good decade for them, which I blame on Symbiont Cloned Corporate Raiders. And both properties were pretty big at the time. Rumor has it, that they wanted to do a head to head shot of Picard and Xavier, but Patrick Steward declined to model for it after he saw the character, and murmered "I'll probably end up playing him someday." But think of that story being told by Stan Lee, it's much better that way.
