I have written some games in my spare time, but nothing I've ever sold for money. I started writing a Legend of Zelda clone last fall, which is now up on SourceForge: sourceforge.net/projects/legendoftux/I'm planning to work on it some more after I finish up with Final Fantasy 13.

I once tried out to be a big player in the Yahtzee industry. But Milton Bradley said " No Dice." I do not apologize for that terrible pun. There's a term that we in the terrible pun industry use to describe things like this. That term? GOLD I am not in the videogame industry but my friend apparantly knows this guy who work for voltion (sp?) I guess he did something for Saint's Row 2. He never gives inside information though.

As a serious answer(not that I'm enjoying some of these joke answers, pretty good ones), I am in the industry as an independent developer. Just about the only insider info, I got right now relates to my current platform(s) in the business, the iDevices(iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad). Right now the big news is Apple is going to be f***ing over, oh, damn near 90% of the developers of iDevice games. Their iPhone OS 4.0 update is basically going ban the development tool programs that have anything to do with Adobe/Flash, this includes things like Unity 3D, Torque, and could possibly even include the tool program I use, GameSalad. There are two main theories as for why, 1) They just REALLY hate Adobe/Flash and 2) Because supposedly apps made with Flash or something related to Flash can't be used in the "multitasking" feature of the OS 4.0. Both theories come to the same result, Apple just wants apps made with their first party Xcode coding program, C++, or Object-C. So, as if the bulls*** set up to the iPad App Store on launch day didn't piss off most of Apple's developers, this could be the nail in the coffin, cause, let's face it, almost noone who makes/made a game app for the iDevices knows how to properly code, or at least code in Xcode. Most of us used these third party dev tool programs to get around our current weakness to make games(and hopefully money)..... so you didnt actually make the game per se? i sell the damned things if that counts.

Considering a good 95% of the App Store's products are crap, I thank Jobs for that. Maybe he can weed out the crap and I wont have to dig threw 900 pages of so called "games" to find just one worth paying for.

I toyed around with designing an app for the iTunes store, but that doesn't really count. I had something that I thought was pretty decent, but was late to the market and lost interest in re-learning how to code to the level I would need to (I know C++, but haven't used it in a long time and the syntax doesn't mesh with Objective-C real great).
My friend is a project manager with a major studio, though he doesn't do anything technical. Those jobs are hyper-competitive and you have to be a protege or know someone to get in. It sounds like a fun industry to be in, but I think a lot of the fun of playing games gets killed by working in it (especially if you have to do beta testing) and dealing with insane deadlines.
Also, if you're not interning with studios in college, its going to be a beast breaking in when you're done. They get inundated with people showing off Flash and iPhone/Pod games and aren't really interested in that stuff (unless you're specifically applying to a division that handles that kind of stuff, which is typically outsourced due to cost savings). It's a pretty saturated market, so the studios can be picky about who they hire, big time.

I installed all the plumbing in the Mushroom Kingdom.
I just wish I had remembered to connect it to a source of water, now people are using my pipes as transportation.

I make a mint every year on the Call of Duty games alone, and have a gold plated bathroom because of Modern Warfare 2.

I went to a school for this. The school was downright awful and I learned more from online tutorials than I really did there. I am in a bit of a crappy time now but when this is over I am going to work on a demo reel I suppose and try to get into the industry. I'd rather be more of a character designer than anything else.
I do have to say that since being in the school and seeing the process that goes into creating a simple character, it's no wonder movies and games take so long to be made and cost a fortune.
To do one character you have to:
1. Design it.
2. Model it (which can be a real nightmare).
3. Texture it (a fun process).
4. Rig it (a horribly boring part of the process).
5. Skin it (attaching your model to the rig so it can move).
6. Animate it.
This can take a long time depending on what kind of a character it is. Doing a game like GTA (especially GTA 4) is one heck of a big job and it's no wonder it takes a couple of years for a game to come out.

No, no, I did make my games. Just cause I used a third party tool to make my games doesn't mean I didn't make the games. I just didn't code them. Hell, EA uses third party development tools for a good chunk of their iDevice games.

The majority of the crap in the App Store are non-game apps like iFartz or something like that. Most of the games are at least, in some way, playable. And oh, don't think this'll lower the amount of crap apps, games or otherwise. The majority of the crap apps actually come from people experimenting with whatever they are using to make the app. Be it the Xcode or otherwise. There will always be crap apps. And, Apple actually has all but said the reason for this is because of their "multitasking" in OS 4.0.

Nope, not in it, but I probably made more money off the video game industry in one week than most developing games as a hobby ever will in their lifetime. Heck, I even had Runner's World magazine get in contact with me for a story about my game I auctioned off.

But I'd probably buy one just for the purpose of playing it. That right there is what we in the industry call a "killer app".
