I thought Tim Curry was great in the role, but I found the miniseries to be a bit lacking. Especially compared to the subject material.

I started fearing clowns because of this series.

Tim Curry IS Pennywise.
And if there is really a remake of this coming out, the producers would do everything in their power to secure him again for the role.

Why do people always want the same actors to play iconic roles? I don't get it with the fuss over Robert Englund in the Nightmare remake, and I don't get it with IT either - one of the few points of a remake of something that was successful the first time round is to see how other people portray the roles.

Curry was so scary and disturbing as Pennywise. I don't even have any issue with Jackie Earl haley playing Freddy, or someone other than Kane Goddard playing Jason/Gunnar Hansen playing Leatherface/etc. But to me, I just can't see anyone else being as effective in the Pennywise role. Now, could I be mistaken? Of course.

Regarding why people wish for an actor to reprise it, sometimes people just make a role their own. Curry did that with Pennywise, Nicholson did that in The Shining. I applaud that they tried to be more true to the story with the TV remake of The Shining with the kid actually seeing his "friend" instead of talking to his finger, but when you cast one of the guys from Wings in the lead?
Put mildly, hell no.
For a non or rarely spoken part, such as Leatherface or Jason, someone can really nail the mannerisms, I can even see someone channeling the spirit that England brought to Freddy, but Pennywise needs a certain delivery, a certain way of emoting, and Curry did that so well.
