This for the love of punk rock
a couple of rules
If you don't like punk rock then don't post here
Please leave the comments of "that's not real punk" to yourself if someone mentions a band that you don't feel is punk. We all know there are varying generes and sub genres.
Please refrain from bashing bands that people list. We're here to appreciate not hate.
That being said
I really like Fugazi. I feel like they are one of the less appreciated bands in the history of punk music. I'll admit I'm not as big on Minor Threat as I am on Fugazi.
Germs: They're so simplistic that it makes them awesome
Dead Kennedys are a band I had to warm up to. Jello has a unique voice and it turned me off at first. The more I listened the more I liked them though.
New York Doll, Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols are all to me just obvious of bands to like
Alternative TV is a band that I feel is little known in here in the U.S. but should have been well more known
The Vaselines dabbled in the punk sound with songs like Dum Dum
Bands like Nirvana called themelves punk although I see them more as a punk inspired rock band.
Even though I love all of Green Day's music I am one of the believers that they have moved on from thier punk roots. I still love the band regardless. They still put on a great show too.
Kaiser Chiefs first album had some punk influenced sounds. I really liked it.
There's also quite a bit of pop punk stuff I love like Blink 182 and thsoe bands.
Anyway any punk discussion can go here as long as there are no arguments.

Are The Ramones punk? Either way I love them, but as far as Punk goes "Anarchy In The U.K." is one of the greatest punk songs ever

Here is an under-appreciated punk band named Hickey, preforming a little song called El Farallito, sit back and enjoy....

Love punk rock but I'm getting bored with the newer stuff. I just panned the new Flatliners album because it is, and I quote, CRAP!

Punk is one of may favorite forms of music.
I'm mostly a metal dude, and a lot of my friends get tired of me when I go on one of my punk rock kicks, but that music can hit me in a spot that heavy metal really can't. I don't like one better than the other, though. To me, they're two sides of the same coin.
Being said, aside from the obvious Ramones, the Pistols, and, probably my favorite, the Clash, I love bands like Sham 69, Op Ivy, Rancid, Youth Brigade, X, X Ray Spex, the Misfits, Dropkick Murphys, The Bouncing Souls, and Social D.
In fact, Social D and Bouncing Souls are probably the only two bands I can name that actually move me to the verge of tears. A lot of their lyrics are very....familiar...to me. Plus, they just remind me of the good times that are long, long gone.

I'm becoming more of a metal dude myself but there's still times when I want to go through the back catalog of punk that I've compiled at WRUV and just do a show with what I want to hear at the time. Sometimes, I'm in a mood where short, fast punk rock can fit. Other times, I prefer stuff that's more in the vein of doom metal or thrash metal.

I also think that may be why Motorhead is my favorite band of all time. The speed and the ferocity of metal, but with the simplicity and straight up f*** you attitude of punk. But yeah, sometimes, certain moods call for metal, certain moods call for punk. And punk is a lot more fun to sing in a bar, especially with 5 or 6 other drunken punks.

That's true.
Motorhead is the bridge between speed/thrash metal and punk rock.

Etc

That's true. Motorhead is the bridge between speed/thrash metal and punk rock. I feel the need to add that Thrash Metal in general (especially early Metallica Kill Em All era) is a molding of punk and heavy metal. Which is why I feel it appeals it a wide range of audiance (in the early days fans didn't quite know what to make of it. The music was to punk to be metal and to metal to be punk). One of the main influences of Metallica however is obviously Motorhead 9as they said before they took the two heads as in Motorhead and Diamond Head and blended them together right there is a blend of punk and metal). I never got into The Sex Pistols however them and The Clash were the two main pioneers of punk (the biggest year for punk was 1976 with Pistols Anarchy In The UK which was followed up the next again year by God Save The Queen). They threw the rule book out the window and created a brand new style where as The Clash blended reggae, jazz and classic rock influences into there music. The English bands were followed by a few 'big' American punk bands such as The Ramones (who were a punk band as an above poster has asked) (much like what happened in the 60's 'British invasion' taking influences by the classic American 50's rock and roll stars). Punk however was always seen as too controversial and shocking for the main stream so it was calmed down a bit and leveled out to create 'new wave' at the begging of the 80;'s which became very popular at that time (with bands such as Blondie, The Police, The Jam and The Specials among others). Also out of this NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) was born also which was a huge influance on thrash and other 80's heavy metal bands. Nirvana in the 90;s never called themselves punk they were grunge. However they were copamared to punk by the poress and Kurt Cobain and Coutrney Love were erven called the new Sid and Nancy by some. Grunge however can be seen as being the 90's (Generation X) version of punk (in a journal Kurt Cobain listed a whole lot of influences form every genre of music) and did sound different from punk. However the 90;s brought us a few other great punk bands including Offspring and Pennywise.
