Hi there pimps, playas and pros, this is your morning DJ The Golden Spike, with some mellow morning moods to ease you into the day. First up, a stone cold classic from Mr. Dobie Gray, and a sweeter sound to wake up to I just can't imagine...

Now I hope you're awake enough for a true classic, from the late, lamented... Mr Sam Cooke.

A double header here - I'm a big fan of the British band St. Etienne, and I'm sure they're practically unheard of in the USA... here's their debut single, a cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", along with the gorgeous original, for comparison. This is a bit more lively than most of stuff you'll hear from me... hope your hearts can handle it

Hearing some Neil Young puts me in mind of one of the greatest soundtrack songs I've ever heard - here's his contribution to the Philadelphia soundtrack, one which I personally think blows Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" out of the water.

Here's one from an obscure favourite of mine, and a really nice guy - the very great, if depressing, Vandaveer

Okay, time to get moving now, people, or you're going to be late - this should get your toes tapping - better known as a Nina Simone song, the Billy Taylor version of "I wish I knew how it would feel to be free" is semi-famous in the UK as the theme to the long running Film program, but is a jazz classic in it's own right.

Speaking of Miss Nina Simone, here's her version of the Ruth Etting classic "Love Me or Leave Me"

I'll have to wrap this up soon, but before that, here's the mighty Satchmo with his version of Edith Piaf's standard "La Vie en Rose"
