tomorrow (monday here in the states), it will be Memorial Day. It is a day where we honor our soldiers who serve and have served.
But on that day, we do not just remember those who served and came back or served and still serve.
We also remember those who served and whose service continues as part of the eternal patrol.
Those who fought and died for the freedoms enjoyed, not only by Americans, but for millions around the world, we cannot forget.
My great-great-great grandfather served in the Union Army towards the very end of the American Civil War.
I had a great-granduncle who fought in World War I.
Both of my grandfathers served in the Pacific during World War II, one in the army and one in the navy.
I have an uncle who served in Vietnam.
And I currently have a cousin fighting with the army in Iraq.
I will be the first to admit that I have not lost a family member to war yet.
But I have no doubt that some of you on this forum have.
So on Memorial Day, we as a nation commemerate those who served and returned, and remember those who sacrificed their lives for what they felt was right.
For some reason, this song felt fitting to the occasion:

One of my favorite quotes (that I will probably take out of context here because I think it's longer) is "Freedom is not free". My sincerest gratitude lies in the men and women who have served, are serving, and will serve in the future for putting their lives on the line to protect us here. Talk about a favor you can never pay back, I salute the soldiers!

I always thought that Memorial Day was to especially honor those who served and died, and veterans day was to honor those who served and came back. However let us honor all of our troops.

This is true. However I agree. Let us honor not just our troops but those from other countries who choose to aide us as well. We are not alone over there.

In memory of all the troops we've lost and all our ally country's who have lost lives while at our side. Our countries may be different, but today we are all brothers and sisters living on earth.

I'll admit, Memorial Day was just another day to me until 1997 when I went out to Arlington Cemetery on a trip to DC. The sheer number of those who either gave their lives or put their lives on the line moved me and ever since, no only is Memorial Day a day to honor those who stood up so I could be safe at home, but also worth remembering those who came home safe. We owe them as much honor as we do the comrades who took the risk and paid the price.
From the bottom of my heart, from Lexington and Concord to Kabul and Kandahar, thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Absolutely, I always see the Memorial cemeteries on TV and it is crazy to see just how many lost their lives in the name of Freedom and America. I think a lot of people take freedom for granted, that's why I love days like Memorial and Veteran's day, to remember just HOW we got our freedom and WHY we are the free country we are today.

Over 600,000 Americans have fought and paid the ultimate price for our freedom and our values. Including many of my good friends.
I love you and miss you guys. Battle on.

Yes, Memorial Day, originates in the practice of decourating the graves of civil war dead, which given the sheer number of widows, was a major event. Veteran's day is linked to a international memorial day celerbrating the end of the Great War, which became Veterans day when it was no longer the war to end all war. In any case, Hail the Victorious Dead!

I think Memorial Day (and for that matter, Arlington) was always summed up well with one thought: History written in stone, one name at a time.
