There's a picture on the internet of a bunch of smashed Koopas, and one of them says something like "And we're the bad guys!" It's very true, Mario is hardly a hero.

Don't forget the way he hits Yoshi in the head and the massacre described in the instruction book for Super Mario Bros:
One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.
Hitting those poor bricks is basically killing a mushroom person (a toad I assume).
Great advert though.

I wouldn't say the worst person ever, but he has done some pretty douchey things.
Kept Donkey Kong jr away from his papa(Donkey kong jr.)
Forces Luigi to stay home so he can have all the glory(Paper Mario)
Is to lazy to testify for himself in court(Super Mario Sunshine)
He pretty much lets Princess Peach get kidnapped half the time even if it's the most obvious trap/diversion.
On the other hand, he has saved the universe... Not that that's a big accomplishment in video games nowadays...

See the Mushroom Kingdom actually belongs to Bowser, when he "kidnaps" Peach he's arresting her for treason b/c she's turned it into a renegade province. Peach sexes up Mario to cloud his mind and make him think she's innocent in all this. Why do you think Luigi stays behind so much? He doesn't want to get caught up in the rebellion and killed. |

Whatever the crimes of Donkey Kong Sr., there was no reason to bring an infant gorilla into the mix. And yet there stands Mario, mocking and attempting to kill or capture a BABY for daring trying to rescue his father. No wonder Cranky Kong ended up being so bitter and senile. He had to witness terrible things. |
