That's the puzzler, the fiv doors were closed and there were no cracks or holes he could have gotten through. When I put him back and slid over the glass door it felt a bit loose so I think he was able to push through it and escape (though not very far)

Happened to a friend of mine a few times. The first time, I just happened to see it slither under the table while I was sitting down so I said. "There it is!" I wasn't there the other times but they said they just put a frozen rat on the floor and waited. (Mind you the snake already ate frozen rats) They figured it would get hungry eventually. So they only put on the rat at time they were home and could watch it. But I don't think that would work if your snake is used to live food. That reminds me, I need to pick up some Pinky's later.

Ah yours is still fairly little then if he's on pinkies still.
Which reminds me I need to pick up some fuzzies tomorrow.
I have a fancy corn snake myself. He can be mean at times but he can be really loving too.

Not particularly mean although his tail started vibrating like crazy yesterday when I put him back in his fiv after finding him. He's calmed down now though.

It was months before I knew my turtle could make noises. Scared the hell out of me when I was trying to sleep. Think kind of like a croak mixed with a quack.

Check your bank records. Don't trust a snake. He was probably sneaking out to order a wife. I have a yellow bellied slider, but turtles aren't exactly escape artists. Tell that to my snapping turtle that my dog pulled out somehow and went missing for 2 days before showing up in my bathroom. To this day I believe this was a well played prank by my mom.

Do snakes make good pets, overall? I've been thinking of getting one someday, but always wanted to know if it'd be worth it? Is taking care of a corn or king snake too difficult? Is it rewarding emotionally (i.e. do they show much affection)?

Snapping turtle, lose? I bet you were watching your toes for dear life. Turtles can be surprisingly athletic, but to be fair, I guess the dog pulled him out, or your mom did, it wasn't him leaping out.

Yeah, turtles can't climb sheer walls. Snakes, well, any Eel shaped animal is pretty good at that kind of thing.

Is it rewarding emotionally (i.e. do they show much affection)? Some snake owners will claim they show affection, but in truth no, they don't. They're reptiles. Their brain is not like that of a mammal (or even a bird). Their survival instinct reigns supreme, so their concerns amount to food and not being killed. That said, they can develop recognition around you, which leads to them not flipping out. But all in all, their brain structure is so primal and instinct driven that you shouldn't be expecting too much.

Yeah when I say my snake is being loving it's when he slithers up and down my arms and wraps himself around me as opposed to trying to escape when I take him out. There are days he'll start trying to climb out of his tank where he'll come right to me and let me take him out. Other days he wants nothing to do with me. I personally like having a snake because I like snakes and have since I can remember. As far as emotional reward there isn't much to it. Corn snakes really aren't hard to take care of at all.

While, in truth, I know there is no emotional reward or attachment, some snakes can give a sense that there is such a thing with them.
I'm not a big corn snake person at all. Red tail boas, on the other hand, are great. We have a male that we got as a baby and have had since the year we got married(so six). Personally, I would rather have him than a dog or cat.
