So, I'm trying to buy a house, and thanks to my ex-wife, who ran up a $9k credit card bill in my name and then left me holding the bag, I had to settle that debt to the tune of five grand in order to get my credit score up to where I can get the mortgage. Suffice to say, I'm not in a good mood right now, and she's permanently on my shit list.

How did you settle a credit card bill for four thousand dollars less than what it was?
I myself don't even have a credit score. I don't plan on buying a house due to going into stand up comedy where i'll have to travel a lot.

Will you just end all this drama with your ex-wife already and just punch her in the face?!

Oh, I wish I could Everett...I wish I could.
And the reason I was able to settle it was because she ran it up and didn't pay the bill for about 5 years. Collection and judgement rigamarole later, I'm stuck holding the bag because my name was on the card, and she was an authorized user. They took $5k, and I'm looking to kill something right about now.

5 years and they didn't take her to court? Or you? Maybe it wasn't enough, but that sucks still.

No wonder the 2008 recession happened. No doubt stories like yours have been repeated many times around the world. Even some reasonable credit users like you end up choking the system for various reasons like ex-wives.
This is why I stick to the prepaid cards if I need to buy stuff off the Internet. I'm single myself, but I'm quite paranoid about stuff like this even so.

Sounds like the end wasn't amicable.

I have $150,000 of Student Loan debt and haven't had a full time job in well over a year. Getting a house for me, unless I pay cash for it, will be a statical impossbility. That's right kids, the only way to get ahead in this world is to go to college. As for what your ex did to you, that is horrible. My dad got buried in debt by his ex wife and its still not pretty some 20 years later. She just moved on to ruining some other poor guys credit then another guy after that. I don't know how much one can live with themselves doing that. Once a decade finding a new husband, ruining his credit, then leaving them a horrible mess. But on the other hand, it seems to be working.

Sounds like the end wasn't amicable. To say that I want her head on a stake over this is understating things.

Welcome to the club. I'm currently $5000 in debt, but paying it off...slowly.
I actually was able to get a house. Found a guy who bought another house and was able to get him to transfer the place to me. Had to pay him $1500 and that was that....he just wanted to get rid of the mortgage (450/month).
Best of luck man.

The reason you can settle for a lesser ammount is because the credit card company sells your debt to a collection agency who then in turn profits off you paying them back. That's why you get hounded by debt collectors.
