Well, should I?
(Before reading any further, understand that it's not practical for me to acquire a console right now, primarily for budgetary reasons. I'm a PC-only gamer, though not by choice.)
It's currently marked down to $27 for Steam's July 4th sale. I've considered SF4 several times before but never went through with it. I know Super SF4 is coming out for the consoles so the vanilla edition is about to be eclipsed, but I haven't seen any word yet on when or if there's going to be a PC version of SSF4 and I doubt it would be worth it to wait and spend more money anyway.
I love the old Street Fighter games (especially the Alpha series), although I'm terrible at them. I don't expect to compete with the pros, but is it possible to be decent at this game without spending a lot of money on a fightstick? I only have an Xbox360 controller, and I've heard that if you have to use a gamepad for a fighting game it's one of the best because the thumbsticks have circular (rather than square) gates and such, but I'm still skeptical.
Is there a solid base of players online? Is the multiplayer smooth and generally free of lag if you have a decent internet connection?
Help me out here, fellow crappers.

Do you have a controller for your PC?

Do you have a controller for your PC? See the part of my original post where I asked if one needs an arcade stick to compete, since I only have a 360 controller plugged into USB port. I'm guessing nobody here has played this on the PC...

You're good to go then. I have it on X360, but I wouldn't buy it if I didn't have a controller. It's hard as shit. Just get ready to get pissed off.

I'm sorry you apparently do. Furthermore, part of the reason I'm terrible at the old games is because the only time I get to play them is on emulators.

I'm terrible with fighting games but with a little practice, I got damn good with Cammy. Street Fighter is one of the easier fighting games really as half the characters have very easy special moves. Note: I have a friend who plays Street Fighter non stop and I managed to beat him with Cammy quite comfortably. Mind you, we were both using controllers and he uses a fightstick so I guess I was more used to it lol

I honestly don't know if they'll port super to the pc, since vanilla was bootlegged like crazy.
However it wouldn't be that hard for them to do it, since the arcade versions run on basic pc framework.

I'm guessing nobody here has played this on the PC... The 360 controller should do just fine. However, if you have a 360, I'd suggest getting it for that anyway. Either way, I got it on the PC and I really like it, though using a controller is necessary (an arcade stick though, not so much) or else it'll be a pain in the ass. As an added bonus, installing or even creating custom skins for this game is really easy (I'm currently using custom-made skins for Chun-Li, Dan, Ken and Cammy).

Depends on if you use a d-pad or not. The X-Box's D-pad is terrible and you will be destroyed in a fighting game if you try to work with it

Just get something your good at and will enjoy. when it comes to street fighter iv online, if you didn't start early you're going to suck now. It is easy to jump into though, with it being more like Super Turbo than Third Strike. Anyways if you don't know how to play with stick, do not play with stick it takes a while to get used to. Unless you want to learn how to play with stick i can guide you to the tutorials on eventhubs. Also Have fun. but Super Street Fighter IV is way more awesome, have fun on the pc though.

Picked the game up yesterday, already found EventHubs and spending a lot of time in training mode. I'm finding that my thumb is too clumsy or the 360 controller analog stick isn't precise enough or both, but I'm actually having better success holding the analog stick between my thumb and index finger. I'll probably buy an arcade stick eventually. My birthday is coming up in about a month and I have older relatives who never know what to get me, so I'll probably just suggest a Best Buy giftcard. Definitely hear you on the custom skins, SnakeBite, haven't actually installed any yet but I've been browsing and some of them are spectacular, marked improvements over the originals (I've seen a custom C. Viper model/skin that makes her actually look semi-decent. God what an awful character design.) I'd like to see SSF4 get ported of course, but if it doesn't I'm not going to be broken up about it too much. Honestly I don't see what's so great about it. A few new characters nobody wanted (yeah, I was just inconsolable when I found out Ibuki wasn't in the original game, really ) some extra costumes, a few move tweaks, and I'm supposed to pay the price of an entirely new game?
