So I've been on an art-house movie binge and I've watched alot of Ingmar Bergman's films lately the best being Persona, Smiles of a Summer Night The Virgin Spring and Wild Strawberries. I really think he is phenomenal and makes the best dramas I've ever seen. Their just so simple and powerful in my mind he really does a great job giving the actors an opportunity to give amazing performances and having truly heart-wrenching scenes.
Also he was great at making realistic plots that didn't seem so contrived but at the same time didn't come off boring. Sometimes I forget how much I really love simple dramas and get caught up by complex visuals. So I don't if everyone has seen one of his movies but if you have what did you think of him?

I agree with original post. Wild Strawberries is on my list of Top 50 films ever made.

I'm a big fan but I haven't seen that many of his films. I was first introduced to his works in a European film course, getting to see "The Seventh Seal" and "Persona". I've seen: The Seventh Seal, Persona, The Hour of the Wolf, Wild Strawberries, Cries and Whispers, and Winter Light. Persona has my favorite film sequence of all time in Alma's account of her sexual encounter on the beach and The Seventh Seal is probably my favorite of the films I've watched. Still need to see a lot of his stuff.

I think Persona is a masterpiece. There isn't one director alive that can touch that film. Persona is one of the few hypnotic films I've ever seen. The only other director that does that for me is Terrence Malick. Fanny and Alexander is on the long side but still a great drama about family and life. And I really enjoyed The Virgin Spring. I have problems with The Seventh Seal. It is probably due to my attention span and being raised on flashy American cinema. But I also think that just because a film is a classic doesn't mean it is timeless. In short, Bergman is one of the three best directors to ever live.

I know they are great films that I should watch and appreciate as great landmarks of film, but I just find them impenetrably dull. I've been spoiled by fast edits and exploding robots.

He's not my absolute favorite director (though he is one of them), but without hesitation I can say I honestly believe he was the best director who ever lived. Nearly all his movies are masterpieces. Persona, The Seventh Seal, Cries and Whispers, Hour of the Wolf, Winter Light, The Virgin Spring, The Devil's Eye and Music in Darkness are my favorites. I think of Persona as the greatest movie ever made.
