I'll take black and white over the loud heart beat sounds and the pulsating colors/seriously slowed movements/blurred vision anyday. If the black and white is just done that way, you've still got a better chance, imo. But my first TV was black and white. And I don't think the "collectables" has died down a ton it just switched genres somewhat. There are skulls to collect in Halos, orbs in Crackdown, two types of orbs to collect in Prototype, and stuff in San Andreas (not sure about GTA4) Yeah but in most of those cases you don't NEED to get them to move on. For example, the collectibles in the Halo, Assassin's Creed, and No More Heroes games are optional. You could go through the entire game without getting any of them. If they're just optional, then it's good. The problem is when they tie it to actual game play ala inFamous, where you have to collect them to give yourself more energy to use your powers, which runs out way too quickly otherwise. I really hate that trophies have made collectibles standard for games that don't really need them.

items and enemies that magically reappear if you leave that screen, even for a second, and then return to it.

The anti-piracy code wheels or having to pick a certain word from the manual, although they're still better than DRM. I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers these. All the old computer based RPGs - the Bard's Tale series, the Ultimas, the Wizardrys - had this, but the worst offender was the AD&D series (Pool of Radiance and its sequels) with the code wheel. A flimsy little paper contraption that fell apart in three weeks or less, yet you couldn't load the game without it. Ugh!

I think we are speaking about it in two different terms. I was thinking from more of a single player perspective which is generally how I play games. but I could see for a multiplayer why the regeneration would be at least considered more superior. I'll agree with you there, in certain cases. But to me health icons in general take me out of the game. If regenerating health is unrealistic, what about rising from the dead? It reality, the gunshot wounds you suffer in video games like Call of Duty would put you down regardless of medical attention.
