I've been wanting to do one of these for a long while, but never did quite get around to it. Was leaning toward Pro Wrestling for the NES... but I kind of suck at it, so will try that another time.
For now, though, why not share the love of farming?
Some background information - Friends of Mineral Town is the GBA remake of Back to Nature for the PS1, which in itself was a quasi-remake of Harvest Moon 64. Harvest Moon 64 was, as indicated by its name, on the Genesis.
Or not. In either case, Back to Nature has also gotten two other remakes at various points - Back to Nature for Girls which was Japan-only - though itself remade for the GBA as More Friends of Mineral Town - and Boy & Girl for the PSP which has both versions of Back to Nature on it.
Back to the subject at hand, though, in the process of moving from the N64 to the PS1, the writing became a bit more varied, a lot more crops were added, and oddly despite the whole point being to recycle models and characterizations some new people showed up with the 64 carpenter and one little boy vanished from the rest of the series because Back to Nature became the standard stock cast from there on out.
Now, before we can dive into the world of agriculture, there are a few things we need to address - what do we name our farmer and his ranch? How about the dog and horse? And perhaps most importantly - what sorts of women can a new guy in town who owns nothing but some tools, a pair of overalls, and a nice hat marry?
Ann works at the inn with her dad. She's a tomboy who likes eggs, therefore mostly relegating her to jokes from the Amanda Show, but she's also the only other person on earth who owns a pair of overalls. Your rival for her affections is Cliff, who spends his time sitting at the church mulling over the fact that he has no money and nothing to live for.
Elli is a nurse, but don't expect to get any of that money she makes in your pockets if you marry her and she's fond of milk and strawberries. A portrait of ethics, your rival for her is the only other employee in the two-story hospital in town. For some reason wears the same outfit as a nurse she did when she was working in a bakery in 64.
Karen's the town drunk. She doesn't seem to really do anything besides loiter at the grocery store, but she's gone from being the hardest wife to get in 64 to being possibly the easiest here given all she requires is large amounts of alcohol and cheese. Your rival for her is Rick, who went from being a genius inventor who didn't do much in 64 to being a geek who works at a chicken farm.
The shy librarian. Mary is for some reason the one person in this series who had her name changed when being recycled into a different game - she was Maria in 64 - but that's the only difference whatsoever. Still shy, still works at the library. She's fond of mushrooms and assorted colored weeds you find about and the jokes write themselves from there, and your rival is Gray who works at the blacksmith's.
A girl with inexplicable pink hair and red eyes who works at the chicken farm. She likes eggs and strawberries, and your rival for her is Kai, who is only there one month out of the year and every other guy in town seems to hate.
F*** you, the Harvest Goddess takes too much work.
So, who will it be, and what names will we go with for the farmer, ranch, dog, and horse? Toss out your suggestions now and I'll get started in the next day or two.
