Hey, remember back in 1998 and early 1999 when everyone (mostly everyone) was on the HHH bandwagon, wanting him to finally get a shot at the main event? I fully admit I was. Be careful what you wish for huh?
Well anyway, were you in the majority of people pulling for HHH before he became...well you know.

Honestly, no. That seems like a lifetime ago. I didn't really care for Sideburns McGameface back then. Had I known what hell would later follow, I would've appreciated him more back then.

I was a fan, but he is the most stale thing in wrestling. Nothing about him has changed since 2000

I didn't have internet access until 2003 so I wasn't even around for that. Personally I liked him as a wrestler back in those days, but I was never a fan of his long winded, rambling promos. The McMahon-Helmsley era was torture in that respect.

No. I was in the IWC back then but I always hated him even when he shortly returned face in 2002.

I liked him as a heel in 97/early 98. I have never liked him as a face, I always thought he was a better heel. He was my favorite member of the original DX, he was funnier than Micheals and didn't come off nearly as gay as Shawn did. I didn't understand why after Wrestlemania they didn't build up a fued between HHH and Austin, it just made sense. HHH/Austin headlined house shows for the month after, but it never became a tv fued. They could have easily used the logic that HHH was going to do what Micheals couldn't, basically like he did with DX. They could have incorporated McMahon helping HHH, HHH wouldn't really like McMahon either, but he would take the help. Also there really wasn't many people for Austin to fued with, fueding with HHH would give him all of DX to work with on tv.

HHH was one of my favorite wrestlers in 2000, but he quickly pissed all that goodwill away as far as I am concerned.

Here's my own personal Triple H-ometer;
He was the heel that got me back into wrestling in 2000 and I thought he was fantastic all the way up until his first quad tear in 2001. I coulndn't wait for him to come back, but got more and more dissapointed with him after he did in 2002. He wasn't the same wrestler and his face run sucked. This spiraled into the Reign(s) of Terror from late 02 to Wrestlemania 21 where, well he became awful in my eyes, and I won't bore you with why because everyone knows why he sucked during this period.
Post WM 21 however he started to become more interesing. He had a feud with Flair in late 2005 which poduced Flair's last great match imo (cage match at Taboo Tuesday 2005), and slowly but surely was being turned face by the audience. Then he reformed DX and I got a kick out of it for a while, but by early 2007 was becoming sick shit of their schtik.
Then came the second injury. Since he returned from that one in August 2007 I really couldn't care less. He can occasionally put on a great match and cut a great promo but for me he's become too stale.
SO, to answer your question, yes I remembered when Triple H was beloved.

I was always a fan of The Rock. He was the guy that regardless of being heel or face I always backed so of course seeing as though Triple H was his main rival I never liked Triple H.
The thing I don't get though is that it seems as though in 1998 and 1999 a lot of people wanted Triple H to get the title. Yet from winning the title the day after Summerslam 1999 right up until he crashed the Stephanie Test wedding he was really struggling to get heat or be taken as a serious main eventer. Where did all the fans who wanted him on top go when he finally made it ?

I like him when he's not main eventing. I love the current Sheamus vs Triple H feud, he should just stay out of the main event.

A lot of net fans wanted him to win the title, seeing him as the next Harley Race or Ric Flair or whatever. Its easy to see why, since he was an incredible wrestler at the time. The fans didn't buy HHH for a grip. In many ways, he got the Sheamus push out of nowhere and started going over guys who had been around for awhile and were much more popular like Rock and Foley.

Ah right so a vocal minority liked it whilst the majority didnt. I always remember reading somewhere that Triple H was the first champion of the Attitude era that was synthetic. As in unlike with Foley or Rock or Austin the fans were not telling Vince to make Triple H a star ,Vince himself just decided to do it which is why for a long time the fans crapped all over it. So I can see where the Sheamus comparisons come from. That said in from his Street Fight with Cactus Jack to his Quad injury he was incredible in the ring. I still found him boring on the mic but he was putting on classic matches every week. After that quad injury he was never the same.

I was a fan of HHH until 2002. Haven't been able to stand him since. I think I would turn on anyone who got shoved down my throat THAT much, though.

As soon as I read the thread title, the first thing that popped in my mind was "Damn, 1998 was a long time ago, wasn't it?"
And in many respects, that's the truth for me. I didn't like Trips after he turned heel and broke DX in half, I didn't like his later reformation of DX, and (while in hindsight the Two Man Power Trip was friggin' awesome) I didn't like the Power Trip either. As a matter of fact, either HHH has had heat with me, or just not been cared for since he turned on DX in 1999.

I HATED him from 2000 on until that promo where he told Cena that he couldn't wrestle for s*** no matter how over he was, basically, and became a fan again just for that.
