And once some time passes, will he still be hated by smarks or will he be remembered fondly like The Rock & Hogan (to an extent)? I think that eventually people will look back on his matches and realize that maybe he wasn't all that bad.

When John Cena retires, Vince McMahon will shut down the company because no one will be able to match up to his "legacy".

I don't think I ever HATED Cena, so much as I got tired of seeing him. As juvenile as this sounds, when he made poop and sex jokes all the time back in 03 to 05, at least he was kinda funny.

I'm 22 years old, so it's not like I'm just too young to appreciate his "greatness." If I don't find him entertaining today, I don't see why I would 10 or 15 years from now.

It's the law of SNL, whats funny now isn't until down the line something worse takes it's place and what isn't funny now is only funny by comparison to the current product. Replace funny with "entertaining wrestler" and you might get what I'm talking about.

Oh I get what you're saying, I just don't necessarily think that it's true. The thing is, when people complain about how much new stuff sucks compared to 10 or 15 years ago it's usually out of a sense of nostalgia, and to be nostalgic for something, you generally have to have liked it to begin with. There are only a few things I hated 10 years ago that I see in a more positive light today (i.e. Shawn Michaels), and to reiterate my earlier point, it's only because I was too young to really appreciate them at the time.

He will be remembered as the defining wrestler of his generation. A legacy unparallelled, a moveset unrivalled and a crowd reaction that the likes of Hogan, Austin and the Rock could only dream of.

For what it's worth, I use Saturday Night Live as an example because when Will Farrell and Chris Kattan and the rest had their mid to late 90's run I thought it was pathetic. Then I watched a few years later and the show was even WORSE and I mined what I could for humor out of those late 90's years for the show. John Cena may not be a fantastic performer, but just imagine if they can't find someone better and push some mediocre hack, imagine looking back at Cena and thinking how much more talented he is! Just wanted to clarify.

You totally summed up my thoughts on John Cena. I don't hate him I'm just tired of him. I recognise how hard he works and how popular he is. He deserves to be the man in the WWE. I just think after 5 years of being superpushed it is a fair thing to say you are a little bored. To answer the question I don't know how he will be seen. If the guy after Cena is a sort of Stone Cold type guy who takes the WWE back into being red hot and a part of the mainstream he probably won't be remembered that fondly apart from his fans.

Just wanted to clarify. please tell me that you at least liked celebrity jepardy. that stuff was downright hilarious. i'm still trying to get enough wwe promo clips stitched together so that orton is lipsyncing (kinda) as ferrell/trebek and triple h is hammond/connery. THAT would be lovely, IMHO.

This thread got me imagining his retirement speech on Raw. If they happened to be in a smark city would they boo him or give him the respect he deserves?
He probably wouldn't even do a retirement speech as I doubt he'd ever leave the business on a 'final' note considering his love for it, but if there was, I would hope the crowd would give him due respect.

I know the perfection location for Cena's retirement speech, a location where the crowd would definitely give him the respect that he deserves. Say it with me... Hammerstein Ballroom, New York. {Spoiler}

Much like a Dane Cook CD, one or two funny moments does not make a good experience. I don't want to slog through a dozen bad sketches to get to the one GOOD one.
