They just booked them to have a good match.
And it was honestly a damn good match. If you haven't seen it, you need to look it up. It was one of those imo classics....and the fact we didn't know it would last that long made it that much more interesting.

Ther was supposed to be an Edge/Orton match but some business, I forget what it was, meant Orton wasn't there so Cena and Micheals had to fill the time.

There was suppose to be an orton/edge match but Orton was found knocked out in his hotel room and the room was trashed and he was sent back home as punishment.

Such a freaking awesome match. Restored my faith in Cena.

Cena was on fire in 2007. I don't think he had a single bad match that year. His matches against Umaga and Shawn were all match of the year candidates, the SummerSlam match between him and Orton is still easily the best between the two and Cena also had a good match with Lashley at the Great American Bash. I'm not a Cena hater by any streatch, but he really hasn't been the same since he returned in 2008. And he got even worse after his neck injury when he returned to feud with Jericho. He's not bad, but definitely not on the level he was in 2007.
But then again, maybe he just had better guys to carry him around than he does now, go figure.

I agree that, so far, 2007 was definitely the 'career year' for Cena.
No shame in finding that hard to live up to, that's how good it was for him. Good-to-great matches left right and centre and a God push to go with it.
This was one of his best of the year, no doubt. He and Shawn started off good and continued to get better.

Storyline-wise, HBK just wanted to one-up Cena prior to the PPV. It felt like his character was becoming more focused on personal pride rather than titles at that point.

I was there live and it was wonderful. I think it was wise to have a match go an hour overseas because (generally) UK audiences are very responsive for the whole night.

Cena is not the same as he was in 2007. He's afraid to bump and he doesn't sell anymore these days.

I am correct in remembering HBK piledriving Cena on the steel steps during this match?
I guess if HBK and Cena want to do a piledriver, nobody in management is going to complain.

I think it's a trust thing with management. Like, if they trust a worker to do a specific move (like Undertaker with the Tombstone, or Evan Bourne with the SSP) they'll allow it, but they don't want green-as-grass guys injuring someone with a spot they're not sure about, y'know?

Same here we got a real treat that night. But if you ask me to remember anything else from that show....you can forget it. Oh god, the undercard was awful. I actually looked up the matches because my memory was only hazy on what they were: Shane McMahon, Umaga & Mr. McMahon def. Robbie Brookside (3-on-1 No-DQ Handicap Match) I don't remember this match at all. Trevor Murdoch def. Matt Hardy I only remember that Trevor Murdoch botched his finisher. Women's Champion Melina def. Maria (non-title) Awful. The Great Khali def. Carlito I only remember Khali being absolutely HUGE, and Ric Flair making a pointless appearence at the end. Quite frankly though the main event more than made up for it.
