Why do people act like this was a face/heel switch?
Werent both guys tweeners at the time with both leaning more to the heel side?

Austin was certainly Tweener. Bret was the ultimate heroic babyface, who was starting to get a little PO'ed

They had Bret whining for months and when he took easy shots at the rebellious Austin, the fans in Chicago booed him hard and cheered Austin after the match.

This always confused me as I had heard that it was a clear double turn, but it never seemed completely clean cut. The fact that quite a number of fans cheered for Bret when he won kind of disputed this. I mean he really only got booed when he kept attacking Austin, and turned away from Shamrock, after the match.

If you watch Final Four 1997 (the Feb. PPV), during the Pre-Show (I have it on tape from back in the day, doubt you can find it on DVD or anything). Dok Hendrix was announcing Vader's, Taker's, Bret's, and Austin's name. Undertaker got by far the loudest pop, and both Bret and Austin got mixed reaction. Then later in the night they still got a pretty mixed reaction, until Bret won the title and got a massive face pop.
Then in March at Raw after the cage match, Bret cut his promo and got a lot of mixed reaction as well. After the Austin/Bret match at WM13, Bret "faceishly" whacked Sid with a steel chair (which got a mixed reaction) to give Taker the opening for the Tombstone.
He didn't completely turn heel until the next night on Raw when he lambasted American fans.
When I look back at Wrestlemania 13, I see Undertaker as the top face and the rest of the stars were tweeners: Bret, Austin, Sid(he was a heel but he always fist-pounded fans, and he definitely got some positive reaction), and even Michaels who was doing the PBP and got a mixed reaction.

But how is that a full heel turn then? The fans were more likely booing because they didn't get to see him brawl with Shamrock, not because all of a sudden they hated Bret for walking away. With this in mind how do people say that this was a double turn for both, when Bret really had a better face reaction then Austin? It really doesn't seem to be the case to me.

It really doesn't seem to be the case to me. i don't get it and never got it either. the commentary also irked me. i wish it could be redone. it's insulting to my intelligence to hear bret hart had a "mixed" reaction, while ausin's was "huge" the commentary is too bias to take it seriously. btw what was the point of austin giving a ref the stunner? he had just taken maximum abuse to his legs/lowerback, yet he does a stunner? that's almost no selling the sharpshooter.

Yeah...him attacking Austin at the end was getting small boos but when he WILLINGLY walked away from the Shamrock fight, the fans booed him hard.

Austin was certainly Tweener. Bret was the ultimate heroic babyface, who was starting to get a little PO'ed The week before Bret busted out a profanity laden(even the F Bomb I kid you not) tirade on Vince and the E. This alone I would say turned Bret Tweener.

The truth is, I feel Bret was not being booked as a face, because of his attitude around the time. Austin was really starting to click. To me the switch began before the match.

That match really seems to stick out to me because most really good matches seem to work a lot of mat wrestling into the first ten or so minutes. Austin/Hart is just a beautifully-paced brawl.

Of course Bret was not being booked as "face". The plan was to turn Austin face and turn Bret heel. A double switch turn. Bret was talking heelish in a complaining way(heelish traits) leading to WM 13 while Austin was never backing down(hero traits) from anyone.

Austin was a heel coming into this match, not a tweener. He became a fan favorite after it but he was still but he still acted like a heel throughout most of 1997. I always liked this Austin, the 1997 one, better than the 1998 one.
As for the Hart/Austin match, I haven't watched it in so longer so I can't remember what happened with the crowd at the end.
