I am currently off work injured and have some time to watch my DVDs and decided to watch every Hell in a Cell match in history...
So which is the best??
1997 - 1 1998 - 3 1999 - 1 2000 - 2 2001 - 0 2002 - 2 2003 - 1 2004 - 1 2005 - 2 2006 - 1 2007 - 1 2008 - 1 2009 - 3
2001 is the only year NOT to feature Hell in a Cell

I'm split between HBK/Taker and Mankind/Taker, purely on the legacy of the two. The HBK/Taker one because of the debut of Kane and The Mankind/Taker for the career defining bumps from Master Foley.

HBK/Taker followed by Brock/Taker.
I don't get all the hype surrounding the Taker/Mankind match. It was a gloried squash match with two huge spots.

The original one with Shawn/Undertaker. Great storytelling, a solid feud and KANE! I know the Foley/UT one is memorable for "BAH GAWD, HE KILLED HIM!" but it's not the greatest thing ever. My second place would be HHH/Cactus Jack from 2000.

There've been some great ones, but none have really surpassed the first.

I'd rank the first as the best, followed by either Mankind/Taker or HBK/HHH.

Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels - 1997, which has always also been one of my top five favorite matches of all time.

my pick is Brock vs Undertaker, just because I've never seen Undertaker be that brutalized in any match ever.
Also I'd laugh if any one picks Taker-Bossman, that was the worst one ever. Laughable because the only spot that was memorable was the Bossman being hanged and the worst line Micheal Cole has ever said
Micheal Cole:That cage is made of steel mesh it can tear apart flesh......you could get you finger stuck in there.

I have to go with 6 man. Just loved it. 5 of the top WWE stars of all time and Rikishi and it was just crazy awesome. The first was great, the second was great but for me it was the 6 man. I know people won't agree, but just my opinion. Also I don't really count the Kane/Mankind vs Taker/Austin as a hell in a cell because the match never began. Just sayin.

While not the best, I thought the HHH/Batista HIAC was surprisingly entertaining. Was expecting a complete snoozefest at the time.
I picked Taker/HBK, I think it's easily the best one.

A lot of those were great, ie. Triple H vs. Batista and Undertaker vs. HBK but for some strange reason I really took a liking towards Nash vs. Triple H. If I am not mistaken that ended the short lived feud between those two and I also remember Triple H hitting Nash in his bad leg with a hammer which I thought was pretty sick lol.

As entertaining as it was, the Mankind/Undertaker match perfectly showcased what the 90s did to professional wrestling: Back in the old days, we had two guys pretending to hurt each other but really weren't and the crowd believed them, in the 90s, the business changed so that now we had two guys that were REALLY hurting each other and the crowd DIDN'T believe it. I appreciate the sacrifices, I love me some Mick Foley, but for the love of god he could have been killed. Pro wrestling should never be about hurting one another, it should be about telling a story that few are capable of telling. I can shove you off the top a cell, you can shove me off a top of a cell, I can hit you over the head with a foreign object. What we're not able to do is tell a captivating story in the ring without hurting one another for real. That's the art, that's what takes the talent.
The KOTR Hell in a Cell was just a glorified spotfest that made all the following Cell matches look bland by comparison because you can't follow something like that. That's why the attitude era did so much harm to the business ultimately: it was so filled with over the top, allout hotshotting that there is absolutely no way to follow it so whatever product comes after that is doomed to look bad by comparison. Every period of hotshotting is followed by an equally long, if not longer, period of drought.
I love the first Hell in a Cell to death, though. It told a great story, both men were at their very prime, HBK's rubber ball selling was top notch and with the debut of Kane added on top, we have a winner. It's one of the matches that I wholeheartedly give a five star rating to. After that match, we never should even have seen another Cell match in a long time, so it would have fealt fresh again and would not have needed to those nearly lethal bumps from Foley to top the first one.
I'm sorry, it just always drives me crazy when people rank the KOTR Hell in a Cell so high on their lists. Everybody's entitled to their opinions, though, it's not that.

HBK took a fall from half way up the cage onto tables. There was an unprotected chairshot too I believe. People were still, while not to the extent of Foley, getting hurt. While I understand your point, I dunno how valid it can be in regards to people hurting eachother. The second Foley spot was completely unintentional so that can't really count either. The match did tell a story of the hatred Taker and Mankind had for eachother. It also showed how much that hatred drove Mankind to finish the match and beat Taker regardless of falling off the cell twice. The story was pretty obvious I thought.

I voted for Edge v Undertaker at SummerSlam 2008 due to watching this match the other day. Unbelievable match, which had lots of decent spots in, and told a decent story.
The other Hell in a Cell matches that i consider amongst the best Brock v Taker from No Mercy 2002. Batista v Triple H from Vengeance 2005. Batista v Taker from Survivor Series 2007. 6 Man Hell in a Cell from Armageddon 2000.
