I wasn't sure where to put this, but seeing as the list solely consists of WWE programming from 1997 to now it seemed like here was the way to go. popularopinions.wordpress.com/2010/04/26/wrestling/I wanted to do a piece about how my greatest appreciation for wrestling comes from how it's the most consistently over the top one-of-a-kind programming on television. Nothing outside of Adult Swim fare like Tim & Eric can compete with the sheer level of insanity presented on a week-in week-out basis. That in mind, instead of throwing together a "worst gimmicks ever" sort of list, I wanted to approach it from the perspective of a television programmer, breaking down and heavily simplifying some of the most notorious events on-screen into how they would be processed in the reality of any other show. Hope you digs.

Oh wow, they actually have good footage of the Katie Vick sex segment! I haven't ever been able to find that. Awesome.

Kinda missed the point of Kurt Angle's "I hate black people" promo there.

Kinda missed the point of Kurt Angle's "I hate black people" promo there. No, I get it. He's showing that no matter what he says, the audience will still cheer him. My point of including it in this list was the methodology behind this for any character in any other show would be that face-value absurdity.

I think including it on a list with Katie Vick and other ridiculous moments is trying to say that that moment was a absurd moment when it was pretty much standard wrestling stuff to build the psychology of the character is stretching the notion of absurd to me. But hey if you thought it was absurd its not my list.

As a theatre major, I should say that 'absurd' wouldn't be used to describe what the majority of the examples given would define. Absurd is is when there is no meaning to the events, in the way that existance would have no intrinsical meaning. Things happen, but they are not directly related to other events. Mae Young giving birth to a hand could be called absurd. I wouldn't call the rest absurd.
An example I would have used would be The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust. He was all over the place, but there was no logic to it. He simply was, and you had to accept him for his existance.

Second - would you say there's meaning to any of those events being on TV at all?

Wow, that Kurt Angle thing was really stupid, it was basically like this:
"I will make my heel turn by saying that I hate stuff that people like."

I would have added the whole Eddiesploitation angle to this list for the uncomfortableness of Orton saying Eddie was burning in hell and destroying Eddie's lowrider which was unnecessary and awful which lead to Mysterio having the worst World title run in recent memory and climaxed with Chavo and Vickie turning heel claiming that Rey was disrespecting Eddie's name with no real reason given man what an awful storyline.

To me, Loony Toon adventures with Hornswaggle are more absurd then Kurt's crazy talk

Wow, that Kurt Angle thing was really stupid, it was basically like this: "I will make my heel turn by saying that I hate stuff that people like." He was a heel well before this. Fans were cheering him, because Cena hate was at its absolute highest. People marked out like sugar-rushed retards when Edge speared him that night. Kurt got his point across, no matter WHAT he said, the alternative (Cena) sucks. The best line from that is easily Daivari when Kurt says he wants to submit Jesus. "Who'd he ever beat?"

I wouldn't put Triple H marrying Steph on the list, for the reasons you said. Remember it was revealed that Stephanie was in on it. So even in the context of the angle Triple H didn't drug her or rape her. It was a plan to get back at Vince.
The reasons I'd say it was absurd was the fact that Test came out to his freaking entrance music, had a match earlier in the night and was announced as Test. There was also the aftermath with for some reason Stephanie being a heel for getting back at Vince. The same guy who had her stalked and kidnapped by the Undertaker, all to screw over Stone Cold Steve Austin. That was the stupidest part of the whole thing IMO, for some reason we're supposed to hate Stephanie after what Vince had done.

Man Hornswoggle being announced as Vince's son maybe was the worst thing to be seen on WWE programming. Although it's a tossup between that, Mae giving birth to hand and Kane necrophilia

Just because it's terrible doesn't mean it's absurd. 1981-2010.
