Before "The King" was full time in commentary (save a match herer or there) what did you think of his WWF matches and feuds?
Can you remember a feud he actually won?
He lost to Piper, Bret, Warrior (I think) and I can't remember on the Jake feud. All I remember is him pouring alcohol down Jake's throat at KOTR.
I think his best WWF match was against Piper becaue he was more old school Lawler.
Thoughts, opinions, favorite matches? Basicly antything Lawler related that has to do with him in ring or anything pre-attitude era commentary wise.

I think Lawler won his feud VS Tazz, didn't he?

I thought he was a very good heel. His feuds were horribly booked though. Kiss My Foot match? Isaac Yankem? Terrible stuff right there. It was also an interesting time to watch wrestling for me, because Lawler was the top heel on Raw, and said flat out horrible stuff about Jake and Stu Hart and then on Saturday I'd watch USWA and he was the top babyface there. And to his credit he was able to pull off both.

the Jake feud. All I remember is him pouring alcohol down Jake's throat at KOTR. That was Summerslam 1996 not KOTR. Lawler got beat off Warrior at King Of The Ring and the PPV after Summerslam (In Your House Mind Games) was Mark Henry's debut match on PPV against Lawler. Who faced Lawler as he sided with Jake at Summerslam and chased Lawler away from Jake. His feuds in WWF were good his two best IMO would say were against Hitman which although it was a good feud they never really had a decent big match together Lawler kept on cheating Bret and bringing in other guys to do his dirty work (Doink the clown at Summerslam 1993, Issac Yankem at Summerslam and Hackushi at In Your House before Hart could face Lawler). The kiss my foot match was there last big match togther and the feud winded down at Summerslam 1995 with Bret VS Yankem. Piper and Lawler was also a good feud and Piper had a good to decent match with Lawler on PPV. I liked the 'true king of the WWF' and thought the end of King Of The Ring 1993 was excellently done. Lawler fitted right in with the goofiness and over the top kid friendly era of New Generation and at a time when most of the booking sucked (that's mostly what made this era so bad it was the booking) Lawler was booked decently. As a heel by the time he went on to do full time commentary during the Attitude Era however he had lost a lot of what made him a great charter unfortunately though.

I always feel he some what won the first part of The Bret Hart feud, of course it was haulted by Lawler's rape charges and the didn't reignight it until 1995

I realised I screwd uo the KOTR comment after I posted it. He's a guy that I feel never really gets the credit he deserves. I never watched the USWA stuff but I would read about it and it threw me off. I loved the Hart feud and feel like Lawler was such an ass at the time. I also liked the KOTR 93 finish. I added so much fuel to the fire. I miss the Lawler from the early to mid 90s.

I thought he was, well, alright, an oldish guy telling bad jokes. I was entertained by the Bret feud, but I always thought Bret should be fighting someone a bit better, higher up the card or someone I thought was a good wrestler, Mr. Perfect, HBK, Razor Ramon etc.

The most bizarre (at the time) was when Vince McMahon did a video for USWA in which he cut a heel promo on Lawler.
It was a preview to the Mr. McMahon character, but just weird to see at the time.

I find it hypocritical that on the rise and fall of ecw dvd, he said he couldn't understand why Vince help ECW out with the cross promotion, when Vince was helping Lawler's USWA and hired Lawler and his son, not to mention that Vince has also helped out Smokey Mountain and the NWA in the mid 90's.

I watched an old Raw from late-1997 where he had a personal beef with Taka Michinoku after he won the Light Heavyweight title from Brian Christopher at the DX December PPV. Was just a good excuse for Jim Ross to use his shoot comments, lol. Still pretty funny, especially the part where Jerry hit a dropkick on Taka and JR is going bat-crap crazy, "Lawler's first dropkick of the '90s!"
King: "I didn't like how he treated my son." JR: "Are you saying Brian Christopher is your son?" King: "No, no, no. I said I would be proud to call him my son...if I had any. Which I don't...of course. Pay attention, Ross!"

Lawler often contradicts himself and WWE history during live tv and PPVs so this isn't surprising. And he just plain hated ECW cause the kid from New York he looked down on and fired in Memphis in 1987 was running it and successfully at that. I also really enjoyed the feud with Bret. The feud with Roddy was too contrived and random so I didn't care too much for that one. It's also funny when Bret was brought in to work on his DVD (The Best There Is...) and saw the interview footage of Lawler bad-mouthing him before Bret decided to come aboard to be involved with his WWE DVD. Bret was shocked because he thought he and Lawler were on good terms with one another.

I also got a kick out of his feud with Tazz where Tazz was probably at his peak creatively in WWE, being this incredibly obnoxious commentator on purpose, and all that. I also like Lawler's repeated denials of having anything to do with the fathering of one Brian Christopher.

Doug also failed to mention that Lawler was Acquitted of the rape charges when it was revealed that the girl lied about the rape. What turned out as a shoot ended up embarrassing the company and closing it down. I guess you can say King got the last laugh.

It's because you can always count on someone or another to say something royally stupid and piss everybody off.
