So I've been thinking of this topic since about June 30th (aka the mid point of the year) however I wanted to wait till Inception was released. Now let me say over all this year so far has been slightly disappointing especially after the killer movies that came out in the last two years. However there has still been some great movies that have came out. The top in the class in my opinion have been Inception and Toy Story 3. Just amazing movies, although I have to say How to Train Your Dragon, Shutter Island and Youth in Revolt were very impressive as well. Also I took the top candidates from the best ones from metacritic. So if you think another movie was better vote other and tell and explain why you feel it's better, but overall I feel I picked the best ones. Also I hope there isn't ten nominees for best picture because right now I'd only pick one maybe two from my list.

I haven't seen Toy Story 3 yet, so I'll go with the shocking omission from the poll : Kick-Ass.

Since I can't really say Scott Pilgrim since I don't have a crystal ball, I'll say the only movie I saw in theaters this year;
Iron Man 2.

Inception.
Excellent mix of action & intrigue. My only complaint is Michael Caine reduced to near cameo length screen time

Didn't see Toy Story 3.
Inception was quite good, but don't think it was Nolan's best film as many online reviews claimed it to be.
Kick-Ass I found to be one big pile of meh.

Didn't see Toy Story 3. Inception was quite good, but don't think it was Nolan's best film as many online reviews claimed it to be. Kick-Ass I found to be one big pile of meh. I kind of agree with you on Kick-Ass. Now it was good but not awesome. I did like a lot of it and there were parts that were great like pretty much everything with Nicholas Cage, Hit Girl and the scene after his mother dies and the only conversation he could have with his dad was if they changed the mascot on the cereal box, that was awesome. However overall it lacked something, the performances were great and all but I don't know I guess it's the whole Mark Millar story that sucked. Really other then The Ultimates I can't think of one story I really liked by him, I see what he was going for but he lacks all subtlety and makes his stories too silly or just completely wrong pacing in his work, really glad the Nolans are doing Superman instead of him. Maybe I need to see it again but my basic opinion is while a decent movie it just didn't wow me and make me saw this is cool, instead I came out of the theater saying it was okay and forgot about it, same thing goes for Iron Man 2 but I feel that was a bigger disappointment with the cast involved. Also Inception was amazing and utterly mind blowing. Maybe it wasn't technically his best (not sure yet it'd probably come down to Inception, The Prestige or Memento) I'd still say it was the best film of the year. Honestly it would take something really remarkable to change my opinion on that.

I liked Inception a lot, but for me my favorite has been Iron Man II.
Probably not the 'best' movie, but I've enjoyed it the most; it's been a pretty weak year for me.

I only saw two new movies this year- The Book of Eli and Kick-Ass. Both were great, but I have to say The Book of Eli was the better one.
