I mean he's not terrible or anything, but he's not all that funny either. A lot of the movies he is in are funny, but he's usually not the funniest part in them.

He isn't bland. The problem is, he's always paired with someone better than him at comedy.
In I Love You, Man, it is Jason Segel, in 40 Year Old Virgin, it is the rest of the cast, in Role Models, it is Sean William Scott, and in Dinner For Schmucks, it looks like the rest of the cast is going to overshadow him again.
What he needs is a movie where he is the runaway star. The problem is he keeps getting placed in ensemble casts.

I don't think he's bland. I think he's just good at playing the straight guy to his wacky co-stars in the movies he's in.
In 40 Year Old Virgin he's the guy that's still in love with his ex. In Role Models he hates his job and not content with his life, while Wheeler is the immature life loving goof. I Love You, Man he is the feminine guy who plays off of Jason Segels eccentric more masculine friend.
I thought he was funny in his cameo in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but for the most part I can't see him playing the naive lovable goof like Seth Rogen or Steve Carrell can. He's better at being the straight laced pessimistic guy that the other actors can play off of.

Role Models, he was the straight business man who was doing the volunteer hours so he wouldn't go to jail and so he could prove to beth he can change. not a particularly funny role. he's funnier than some people give him credit for, but he doesn't always *have* to be the funny one. he's just a good actor that has the right amount of funniness for his roles.

In Knocked Up he's married to Leslie Mann no wonder he's miserable in that one.

Exactly. He's basically a career straight man. You don't see that often anymore. If anything, by being the straight man all the time, it will be easier for him to do the crossover from comedy to drama that a lot of comedic actors try and do.

Paul Rudd isn't bland as he shows it in Wet Hot American Summer. He needs to do more roles like this:

I never thought of it like that, but it's totally true.

I thought his extremely sarcastic/smartass attitude was the best part of Knocked Up.
Debbie: Don't get the kids all hopped up before the trip.
Pete: I guess I shouldn't have given them all of that meth then..

When he has decent material he's good, his was pretty much the only character in Friends I didn't want to eradicate from history at one time or another.
I have to say though, pretty much all the films that have been mentioned I thought were terrible, so he was fighting a losing battle.

When he's in anything that David Wain is apart of, he is very funny.

Not necessarily "bland", but something about his persona's always rubbed me the wrong way.
