Please don't make this political, I'm just asking a question. I'm going to off to college again and I still haven't registered to vote/register for selective service and I'm 19. I heard that when you did your student loans it automatically had you register for selective services, but some people said that you actually have to go somewhere to do it. Also should I register to vote in my hometown or in the town of my college? Keep in mind that I don't live in my college town all year around. I'm really confused about all this and a little scared.

Go to your local DMV to register to vote.

You should probably register to vote in your hometown. It is your most stable address. (It's a pain in the butt to have to keep changing your registration) If you think you will be away at school for any given election, just apply for an absentee ballot.

I HATE that shit. Honestly. It's a forum, people are going to ask questions. If your only contribution is going to be a smartassy "go google it" then why respond?

I'm lucky enough to have just been sitting outside the classrooms one day and some girl came by and gave me the registration stuff.

As far as selective service registration, paper forms should be available at any US Post Office. Or, to avoid the hastle, you could Photoshop a a vagina onto a picture of yourself to say, "See? I don't need no stinkin' selective service registration!"

I heard you when you filled out student loans to go to college, that is one way that it shows you have selective service, because I know plenty of my friends who never heard about selective service in there life.

Yeah, you'll register for it if you apply for student loans, if you haven't already. I signed up for it when I registered to vote. You're actually legally required to once you turn 18.

As to where to go to register to vote, I would say either the elections office or the local library.

I registered to vote at a county fair. Not even my own county, mind you. As for selective services, I know it can be done online as it's what I did. They mailed me a paper to confirm it. www.sss.gov/I didn't actually register until I was 25, however, as I was told by countless teachers it would be brought up eventually. I never ended up going to college or doing anything else and barely got the registration in (Deadline is before you turn 26, although you're supposed to have it in 3 months before/after you turn 18.)

I got lucky as one of my highschool history teachers was heavily involved with politics and brought a voter registration form to class one day

Yes, you are legally required to register for Selective Service. Go do it, it's on their website. Do you really think if we are having a draft, that not being signed up for it is going to make a difference?
Check the local library for Voting information, or your local board of elections. I belive most DMV are required to under motor voter. It's like filling out a card.

I went to the library one day and a man was asking for signatures to get his name on a ballot or a petition for something.I don't remember what. I told him I wasn't registered, so he asked for my address and sent the registration forms to my house. Looking back I probably shouldn't have told a strange man my address, but it all worked out. It's been five years and nobody weird has showed up to my house yet.
