I never thought this was possible, but then I found this:
Now, being born in 1986, my first exposure to this song was Tiffany's version, which I always thought was f***ing horrible! Then years later I found this song and it is pretty goddamn awesome in my opinion!
I mean when the covers overshadow the originals, it definitely is worse than if a pop act does an obscure cover of a good song. Another example of this was in my 10th grade English class, when the teacher was asking for examples of romantic songs for some reason. Someone replied with "Just a Friend" by Mario. YUCK! Biz Markie is awesome and so is the ORIGINAL version of the song.

Tommy James' version is HIGHLY superior to Tiffany's IMO. I'm not huge on 80's pop in the first place so maybe that's why, but I love the simplicity of James' version. Oh and I'll nominate the Jonas Brothers' covering The Beatles' Hello Goodbye. I won't post a video for everybody's sake

The only two covers to ever really make me furious were Madonna's dance remix of American Pie and Vanessa Carlton's horrible cover of Paint it Black.

Miley Cyrus does a cover of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" on her new album. I think its pretty decent, but most people would probably hate it.

God, that version of American Pie was truly awful. The song is about dead people, not making people wish they were dead. And I don't know if there is a good cover of Paint It Black, the Stones nailed that, and no one else has touched it as far as I know.

I thought Gob's version was pretty good, but they're not exactly a pop band. I never liked Pet Shop Boys cover of "Always on My Mind". I'll stick with Willie Nelson or Elvis on that one. (Preferably Willie) Also, Mariah Carey's cover of "I Want to Know What Love Is". Blech.

Good call on that. I cannot believe I hadn't heard that. I have even seen the band live, and didn't know they covered it, and do a good job no less. SO it is 1 good, 2 billion awful.
And actually, one of the girls on American Idol did it really well this past season too. And she did something interesting with it and mostly made it work.

Britney Spears's cover of "Satisfaction" has to be up there somewhere.
Also, some similar singer did a cover of "My Generation" by the Who only she changed the lyric from "Hope I die before I get old' to "Hope I don't die before I get old." I can't for the life of me remember who that was though.

It almost works, but then turns to overproduced bullshit.

All Saints version of Under the Bridge makes me throw things at stuff. Seriously, would post it but the thought subjecting you all to that made me violently sick. And i'm not exactly a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan either.
