the fake medium uses a technique called "cold reading", wherein you give very vague descriptions that could apply to anyone, and fish for more information from the client. And the "American family" line gives away this guy's bullshit.

And the "American family" line gives away this guy's bullcrap. Yep, that's pretty much how all the psychic reading stuff goes. Let the client give you all the information you need, and feed off their desperation for some sort of closure. This whole thing made me really sad. All I wanted to do was hug Bret. The whole time it was like he knew it was bullcrap, but he was just grasping at any straw available. It was like that scene in Man On The Moon where Andy Kaufman goes to the faith healers in the Philippines and they "pull" the cancer out of him, and he laughs because he knows it's all a big joke.

Its likely fake, but he's very good with some of the facts. Thought as mentioned, Bret is famous and research on he and his family would be easy.

Actually, he was wiping tears away a couple of times. Whether that's because he actually believed it or just from talking about Owen, who knows?

Can someone explain something? Why was the guy that was doing all the dead talking, constantly (and annoyingly) asking Bret "Understood?"
Your mother says you are not the normal American family, understood?
I'm reading that you have two brothers, understood?
She says, understood, that your siblings don't all get along with you, understood?
He says that what happened isn't your fault, understood?

He reminds me of the guy in Red Dragon who always says "Do you see?" when he's showing slides of his victims.

One's a Necromancer, one's a lawyer, one's a 18th century theologian who wrote the sermon "Sinners in the hands of an Angery God" and played a major role in the First Great Awakening.
