I'm watching a lot of older matches from NWA/WCW and Ross never fails to mention someones football accolades and it's really annoying. As if being a wrestler isn't athletic enough even for him or whomever put him upto it.
I went to soccer practise for one day in first grade, if I was a wrestler he'd probably mention that too.

You also need to remember that during the time JR was calling NWA/WCW events in the late 80's/early 90's he was the play-by-play man for the Falcons. Probably Turner Sports encouraged him to include a wrestler's other athletic accomplishments. The same thing is done during a broadcast of another sport.

I see nothing wrong with it, it gives it that big time feel if you ask me.

I quite like it. A lot of people who deride wrestling for being "fake" think the guys are just bodies. Whereas its true of some wrestlers, its good to show that many of them achieved something in more a"legit" athletic field.

No, it's pretty cool. I don't even like football and I like it. Especially when they make it into part of the gimmick, like how Neidhart supposedly quit the NFL because it wasn't rough enough.
Added a bit to his character.

The problem is that most of the time the teams they played for aren't that prestigious. I mean, if they played defence for the Patriots or something that'd be fine, being off the bench for Bovine University isn't.

There is that to it, but generally with it being wrestling , if it was a prestigious team they would really sell it, but if it was the bovine university (brilliant Simpsons/ Ralph Wiggum reference by the way) they would probably just say something along the lines of "an excellent college football player" and it would achieve the same goal.

It's a very cool aspect to know that a wrestler has a background other than grappling, and since JR is part of the Oklahoma college football program... it's only natural.

LMAO thank you friend for bringing that little spark of happiness into my day. When I grow up, I'm going to Bovine University! Classic..

I don't know, I guess I don't have a problem with it. It sort of adds to the 3-Ring Circus aspect of wrestling. That a diverse range of characters with different backgrounds are now under the same roof.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in those days, kayfabe dictated that wrestling be presented as a legitimate sport, particularly with Jim Crockett and the NWA. Jim Ross at the time was probably the best at what he did (sorry, Gordon Solie fans, but his heyday had passed by the late 1980s), and adding another individual's sports accolades from a previous athletic venture would add legitimacy to the wrestler, and by proxy, wrestling as a whole.

It's also a way to get a cheap hometown pop. JR could say "he played for Marshall" and all the West Virginia fans would want to root for the guy.

While I've never been at a TV taping, I can only assume the people in the building can't hear JR...so him saying it really won't get much of anyone to pop.

Referencing the pro of DI college football careers of the wrestlers made them see like more well rounded atheletes

Well said. Also, if Ron Simmons, former All-American lineman gets beat, it makes wrestlers look tougher than football players.

I would add a exception to the role for any reference Ross made to Marcus Alexander Bagwell's career at Sprayberry High School in Atlanta. Those were just dumb

His constant grid-iron and college references are especially annoying for me as a British WWE fan.
So what if someone graduated from Alabama University and was a quarterback?
It's not quite as bad as his habit of referring to the Oklahoma college team.
Doesn't seem to do that as much these days, thankfully.
