Yes, to the delight of about 3 people I've decided to talk about yet another PPV.
For anyone who has ever read any of my posts might have noticed that I always list my favourite PPV of all time as this very show. In fact, if I was only allowed to watch one show every year then the Series would get my choice. Even if the matches nowadays aren't normaly as great as the old school elimination matches, I still love the concept. Every year or so I have to rewatch this show and seeing as I've watched it again the last couple of nights, here's my thoughts on it.
To anyone who wants to see some damn good events with a lot of wrestling and the minimum of promos then check out the first few Survivor Series shows. Non-stop action for about 25 minutes and also throws up some great matchups.
Anyway, here we go as various wrestlers tell us what they have to be thankful for. Sounds lame, but is actually enjoyable. And I LOVE Vince running down the competitors for every match (although it's so obvious he recorded it a few weeks before the show as Earthquake took the place of The WidowMaker and Vince just dubbed himself saying "AND THE EARTHQUAKE" over that particular moment).
The first match was a great choice for an opener. There are some great sequences involving Martel and Santana. Beefcake and Dusty are really over here and I mark when Dusty hits a dropkick! Does anyone know when Slick stopped managing Rick Martel because I don't recall any storyline about it? And why did they eliminate Bad News in exactly the same way they did the precious year? He's a loner who gets on with nobody, we get it Vince. We're treated to some more agility from Duthty as he hits a nice high-cross body on Boss Man for the win. Boss Man then handcuffs and twats Dusty with the Nightstick for good measure,
Then we get to the 2nd match and I laugh as 4x4's do their drills in the middle of the ring with Hacksaw failing to catch the 2x4. Anytime we get the promise of Bret and Savage in the ring together I get excited as they both kick major arse. Poor old Ronnie Garvin, a few years before he was the World Champ now he's jobbing to a Sidewalk slam from Dino Bravo. And it's always fun to see Hacksaw missing Savage's head by a mile when Savage is tied in the ropes.
I have to mention the great backstage moment when Mean Gene claims that doctors are treating Dusty in what appears to be a broom cupboard. Yeah, cause Doctors do medical procedures in a room with a padlock hanging off the door.
Now we get to the 3rd match. Zeus gets eliminated after about 2 minutes for choking out Hogan. Speaking of the Hulk, he was feuding with Ted over the title around this time and with Jake recently returning from his neck injury at the hands of Ted, we're set up for the match. Now there is something I've never quite understood about this match, about a year ago Demolition started feuding with the Powers of Pain and the Demos soundly ended the feud by winning at WM5. So why are both Ax and Smash pinned by the Warlord and Barbarian respectively and the POP are eliminated by DQ? I could understand protecting them if they were the next feud for Demolition, but within a month Collosal Connection took the Tag Titles and the POP were split up about a month after that. Anyhoo, Hulk is the sole survivor in this one and considering I was a huge Hulkamaniac at this time I was a happy bunny.
And now onto the 4th match as Rude's Brood take on Roddy's Rowdies. In terms of wrestlers, Rude's team pisses on their opponents as he has Mr. Perfect and The Rougeaus backing him up. This match is built up perfectly as everyone was dying to see Rude and Piper fight and it takes an absolute age for them to finally meet. When they do it rather predictably ends up in a double count-out but the Survivor Series was never an event for ending feuds, just furthering them, so I'm happy. There are some beautiful sequences between Perfect and Snuka, especially when Perfect starts arm-dragging and dropkicking.
And so on to the final match. Tully Blanchard was meant to be on the Heenan Family team, but got fired that day so we get to see Bobby Heenan wrestle. The match starts off quick as Andre is clotheslined out and eliminated after 10 seconds or so and this match is really intense from bell to bell. I always chuckle as Bobby Heenan pins Marty Janetty and Arn hits the greatest Spinebuster of all time to eliminate Shawn. We all know this match is gonna end up with Heenan and Warrior at the end and Warrior destroys Heenan for the win.
And so ends my favourite PPV ever. I don't really know why it's my favourite, but it just is. As far as I'm concerned, the greatest period of wrestling in the WWF was everything from Summer 1989 to Winter 1990.
