I'm assuming that this thread theme hasn't been rehashed recently, but go ahead and lock it up if it has.
Undertaker: Face, but one who would attack anyone if provoked. Orton: Heel. Samoa Joe: Face, but that's just me. Rey: Face. Jericho: Heel, but I don't mind his goofy face character. Cena: Face as long as he's not a champion. AJ Styles: Face. Shelton: His mic skills limit him from cutting effective heel promos (IMO), so I'm saying face. Hogan: Greatest face of all time. CM Punk: Heel. Sting: Face. Dusty: How can you boo Stardust? HHH: Heel when he's not dogging it.

Actually, Hogan carried off being a heel just as well as he did as a face. But to add to that list:
Stone Cold Steve Austin: Tweener. gotta love a guy who doesn't care who he beats up.

I'm assuming that this thread theme hasn't been rehashed recently, but go ahead and lock it up if it has. Undertaker: Face, but one who would attack anyone if provoked. I liked him initally as a heel and I thought the Demonic Heel gimmick and Big Evil were good heel runs. Orton: Heel. He should ONLY be a heel. Samoa Joe: Face, but that's just me. I think he should be a tweener in the way Taz was a tweener in ECW...he is numb to the crowd, to pain, to whatever anyone thinks of except inflicting pain on his opponents, and that's WHY he's popular. Rey: Face. LOL how could someone that small pull off being a heel without involving goons. Jericho: Heel, but I don't mind his goofy face character. I actually liked his Lionheart face gimmick from WCW the best of all...if only he stuck with teddy long longer...in his current gimmick he's a better heel. Cena: Face as long as he's not a champion. He was a MUCH better heel in his Rap gimmick...downright vicious with his rhymes...and I loved the throwback jerseys. AJ Styles: Face. YES...he is awful as a heel...FU Russo! Shelton: His mic skills limit him from cutting effective heel promos (IMO), so I'm saying face. Bad ass dont give a damn heel with a manager. I loved him with Mamma...he also was good with angle...as a face he gets lost in the shuffle. Hogan: Greatest face of all time. WHICH made him the greatest heel of all time...once his star faded he couldnt get over as a heel and had to revert to being face. His heel run was based on how over as a face he was. CM Punk: Heel. I dunno...i used to believe that but he's been impressive as a no nonsense bad ass face in WWECW. Sting: Face. Yes...but the question my friend is in which gimmick...He is best as the mysterious UT style dark face (AKA the crow sting) IMHO. Dusty: How can you boo Stardust? Or Ammmmmmmeeeerrrrrrriiiicccccaaaannnn....Dreeeeammmm! HHH: Heel when he's not dogging it. He is a vicious heel...he needs HBK to get over as a face effectively. MORE: HBK: Better as a face but it's very close...he walks the line much better than you'd think Luger: HEEL...he just screams arrogant punk...never liked him as hogan lite or the odd im friends with everyone tweener he was when he went back to WCW. Savage: Heel, he was awesome as the I have everything heel. and later as the master of maddness...even the macho king had it's appeal although that was more Sherri (RIP) Harlem Heat/Booker T: They were better faces. Booker T in general is just too pragmatic to be a believable heel...the only reason the new heel gimmick works is because it's so over the top you just boo it on how stupid booker is acting (and that works in an odd way.)

For me the Ultimate Tweener was HBK.. He Had So Many Qualities back in 90's with his character and persona... he played great underdog champion face and cocky heel as Boytoy/Degenerate so well. His best mic work since his comeback incidentally has been the twice he worked heelish to an extent in promos against Hogan, Hitman (In Montrael) and Cena.

Rock: as a heel i loved the reaction he get when he trashed the town he was in, and the way he would humiliate his opponents.
Austin: Tweener, kick ass, drink beer, repeat
Cena: Heel he's worn out his welcome on as a face.
AJ Heel, he pulls of the cocky im better then you shtick very well, he just needs to not sem like a puppet.

It's very rare a face wrestler is bad as a heel wrestler, with a few exceptions, like Jim Duggan or Mick Foley.
But heel wrestlers can never seem to adjust to being a face. Or at least it's harder. It took Trips nearly 6 years before people warmed up to him enough. And if they change to quickly, like John Cena or Brock Lesnar, most people tend to dislike them, knowing that the WWE is force feeding them their "new hero".

In WWE it is hard because they have their 'one method for all' face formula. They change guys characters to fit a certain mold when they become faces and it just ends up being really boring. Heel transitions are usually done better but they are generally really bad at doing faces.

Undertaker: I'd say tweener, but he's better at being a loner. No friends, no allies - but he has his fans. Orton: Pretty-boy heel. Samoa Joe: Same as Undertaker, more of a loner. Rey: Underdog character = face. Jericho: Great heel. Not as enjoyable as a face. Cena: Heel Cena would have never gotten the title. AJ Styles: Good face. Shelton: Heel, when he was part of Angle's team. Hogan: Have to pick face, he stalls as a heel. CM Punk: Put him in the Undertaker/Samoa Joe list as a loner. Sting: OWWWWWWWWW! California Sting as a face. Dusty: Face, he's the embodiment of the common man. HHH: His face runs are just setting up his natural heel tendencies.

Currently Foley can't work well as a heel because he's been the lovable fat funny guy too long. Back when he was first Mankind or Cactus he could be an okay heel.
IMO Orton and Punk should always be heels. To me they both always come off as smug bastards, so they are both people I want to love to boo.

The feud he had with Flair brought back fun memories for me, but despite how effective his promos were, it made me feel weird because I had gotten used to him being the glib, quirky, well-spoken legend.

Flair: HEEL. YEAH not many people are going to boo him but as heel just works better
Taker: Face. Awesome as a heel in the ministry days but the guy can fight anyone and get 80% of the cheers
Cena: HEEL HEEL HEEL. After the face turn he lost me as a fan
Kennedy: great heel and pray they dont turn him face
HHH: Just too good as a heel and doesnt seem right when he is a face
Kane: heel. Him as a face has just killed his career

I remember late 95-early 96 with Lex Luger. I guess he was a tweener that really teetored on the brink of being a face and a heel big time. Look at the WCW payperviews from Fall Brawl 95 to Uncensoured 96
Fall Brawl 95: He's with Hogan, Sting and Randy Savage, the good guy team Halloween Havoc 95: He wrestles two matches then he turns heel and joins the Dungeon of Doom World War 3: Still Heel, wrestles against Savage, but still helps Sting in the Battle Royal who is a face Starrcade 95: Wrestles for WCW against Japan, and we are supposed to cheer him since he's fighing for WCW, so i guess face Superbrawl VI: He's a face with Sting in two Tag matches, though its questionable. Uncensoured 96: He's in the three cage match and is with Flair and the Doom so hes heel there.
So I guess while it was confusing but it was interesting, and in my opinion the most interesting storyline Luger was in. So I guess he's a better tweener.

More from the OP: Austin: Tweener. Savage: Hard to choose, he has good qualities in both roles, but I'm going to say heel. Jeff Hardy: Face, because I don't think he even can work heel. Nash: He's so engaging that I don't mind it when he breaks the fourth wall, which I hate normally...but heel. HBK: On the mic, he's better as a heel, but his most entertaining ring work comes as a face for me. Vader: at his peak, maybe the greatest monster heel ever. Bret: With the exception of the bizzare 1997 storyline, face. Piper: Ok as a no-nonsense face, but he garnered most of his notoriety as a heel for good reason. Jake: Shouldn't be cheered, shouldn't bother to get cheers. Flair: The quintessential cocky heel, but at his current condition he can't do that anymore unless he's managing.

Luger: Tweener late 95 to early 96 Hogan: Greatest face of all time, yet one of the best heels of all time Savge: A good heel, but I thought he was great as a face Flair: Greatest heel of all time, he can't do it anymore because he's old and respected and its hard to hate someone like that. Bret: A much better face.
