"Ryan Wilson's character in OVW, Jacob Duncan, is being modeled after Waylon Mercy to a degree, which was Dan Spivey's WWF gimmick in 1995. Also note, the Waylon Mercy gimmick was based on Robert De Niro's portrayal of "Max Cady" in the 1991 re-make of Cape Fear." From wrestling-edge.com.
RD, I know you, and many many other, including myself, thought the Waylon Mercy gimmick could have been awesome had it not been for Spivey's injuries. Im happy to see a version of the charecter may be on the way to WWE.

I know Spivey has been retired due to injury for over a decade, but him as a manager would be great. I definitely was one of the crowd saying the Waylon gimmick needed to come back. Great news.

The gimmick I think benefits from the character being a bit of a loner so having a manager who used to do the same gimmick seems like a bad idea to me.

Maybe have him with him in the beginning as a protoge? The after a couple of weeks Spivey could take off.

Sorry, but could anyone give me the CliffNotes on the 'Waylon Mercy gimmick'? It was before my time.

Sorry, but could anyone give me the CliffNotes on the 'Waylon Mercy gimmick'? It was before my time. Waylon was a kindly Southern gentleman with a very even temperament. Only one thing made him mad: being touched a dirty, sweaty pro-wrestler. This was a problem because Waylon, being a gentleman and all, always insisted on shaking hands with everyone he met, including his opponents. This physical contact would send him off in a rampage against his foe.

By the time he gets called up to WWE, he'll be a vampire/cheerleader hybrid.

This was a problem because Waylon, being a gentleman and all, always insisted on shaking hands with everyone he met, including his opponents. This physical contact would send him off in a rampage against his foe. And Waylon would pretty much be in a psychotic state during the match, which would end with a sleeperhold where Waylon completely bugged out his eyes. After the match Waylon would shake hands with his unconscious opponent.

WWE will definetly not change it before he is brought up to the main roster.
