Remember when the Godwins were in WCW as The Texicans. Mark Canterbury was known as Shanghai Pierce. He started out wearing a mask. He later lost the mask in a match against Johnny B. Bad. Was there a reason he wore the mask in the first place ?

I also want to know the circumstances behind Shanghai Peirce and Tex Slazinger in WCW. I know of their existence, but I can't remember what they looked like or what the gimmick was.

I remember Tex Slashinger and Shanghai Pierce. No clue why Pierce wore the mask.
Edit: Their gimmick was that they were Texans. In WCW, that generally meant you wore black and acted like the Blackjacks, Hansen, Windham.

They came to the ring with a bull rope with the cowbell on the old. Their gimmick was one of a Texas Outlaw one.

Another interesting thing to note is the apparent career long connection between Mark Canterbury and Dennis Knight. Those two were always connected in some form or fashion.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe their official team name was Two Tall Texans.

Remember that other group of Texans, the Desperados? It was trio led by Dutch Mantell. I remember a bunch of teasers foreshadowing their arrival appeared for weeks, finally culminating in several sketches of them running around some wild west towns. Yes, that's all. They never wrestled. Anyone else remember?

The Desperados were Dutch Mantell, Black Bart and a third guy I never saw bafore, I believe they called him Dead Eye Dick but I may be wrong, They were on a search for there missing "friend" Stan "the Lariet" Hansen. The Desperados were portrayed as a sort of comedy act of old west criminals that could not shoot strait types. They wresteled once or twice on tv but never really took off. They suposedly were supose to hook up with Hansen (upon finding him)and form a sort of goofy cowboy forsome. Hansen was smart enough to see this coming and stoped showing up to WCW events(thus making the search for him longer than expected). WCW finally got a hold of Hansen(who was wrestling in Japan) and figured out he was not coming back to do the goofy cowboy bit. Even with all this going down Hansen was willing to come back if he was able to be the Stan Hansen character that got heat from crowds, put people in seats, and was legendary world wide. But since this was WCW after all they saw no vaue in that. Hansen was released. Stan Hansen stayed in japan collected a few more titles there, as a single and in tag teams, and never had to play a silly cowboy character.

I'm pretty sure they actually won the WCW Six-Man Tag Team title very briefly.

Tex in particular I recall for having a "fan club" at the Center Stage tapings. These were the "Atlanta Boys," I believe...which included Scott Hudson, Steven Prazak, and others.

I remember Tex (Phineas) had this deal where he would bellow really loudly at the audience.

They reminded me of the Texas Hangmen. If I remember correctly, they were there in that period of WCW when Hogan first came in and the booking style he brought with him, essentially turned WCW into WWF-lite. Many guys ended up being lost in the shuffle because of this and bolted to the WWF. Shanghai Pierce and Tex Slalenger were two of many who made the defection. Of course, being saddled with a Hog farmer gimmick wasnt much better than what they were recieving in WCW, but at least they got a run with the tag titles
