i have often wondered why his movies were so bad. i mean dont get me wrong, i know they were poorly directed, acted, written, etc., but why on earth was THAT the best they could do. did hogan, or the wwf back then, not have enough money to get a name director, or at least a respectable one? i mean, piper got to work with john carpenter, and hogan had like 10 times the name recognition piper did. so why was hogan stuck in such terrible projects?anyone have any ideas?

Probably nobody wanted to work with Hogan and his ego.

I think that in large part Hogan is a really bad actor, so you're not exactly starting with Sir Laurence Oliver to start with...

I don't think it has anything to do with the acting ability or lack therefore of (see: Stephen Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Stephen Seagal, Jamie Kennedy, Stephen Seagal, Shaq, or Stephen Seagal). As mentioned in its induction, NO HOLDS BARRED was written by Vince and Hogan and it was evident that it was a eog piece. Most decent directors (decent in that they're well known but may not be Speilbergean in scope) wouldn't touch it. So you go to a fresh faced cat that wants to get his big break.

at least Hogan is a better actor than Ashton kutcher, at least give him that. No, I'm sorry, but we can't do that. Hogan'smovies were all bad because in every movie, not only was he the same character, but it was ususally the same plot line with a different backdrop. It was a balding, roided up, orange skinned man usually somehow winding up either saving, befreinding, or otherwise assisting kids. Yes, I know, Thunder in Paradise had no kids involved, but it was TV, so he could branch out. But, if you have the same plot line with the same main actor who is as RD said a bad actor anyway, you get crap piled high like meat on a good deli sandwich.

Good point but i still prefer hogan to some of the actors today (i find him terrible BTW)

at least Hogan is a better actor than Ashton kutcher, at least give him that. Kutcher has good comedy timing. Some of his takes on THAT 70s SHOW are very funny. I think he just gets a bad rap because he was in DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR and is married to an older woman. Now Hogan is more on par with Stephen Seagal.

But the edge goes to Segal for more realism, because I've never seen Stevie deliver a backrake whilst yelling HAAAAAAAAAAAHSAAAAAAAAAAH

Tommy Lee Jones can take crap and make it gold (see: MAN OF THE HOUSE). I'll give you Erika Eleniak's funpillows. But I can just google her to see that. Maybe it's just the long standing feud I have with Segal, I don't know.

The brief answer as far as I can see is thus:
- Somehow John Carpenter comped free tickets to Wrestlemania 3, where he had the opportunity to meet Roddy Piper. Carpenter- a lifelong wrestling fan- thought that Piper had the everyman look needed for Nada in 'They Live'. - Equally, Rock was approached by the guy who directed the 'Mummy' movies (whose name escapes me) because, presumably, he thought that Rock would make a decent Scorpion King who looks just about Egyptian, and adding Rock to the cast would bring in the WWF fans.
Hogan, on the other hand, mostly got into movies because HE wanted to, not because Hollywood wanted HIM, hence lousy egotrips of the 'No Holds Barred' variety. Plus, Hogan isn't really adaptable: his look- gargantuan superhero with ridiculous moustache- doesn't really endear him to a number of roles. As a result, his films have mostly had to work round this (Suburban Commando) or deflate it a bit (Mr Nanny). It's all suspension of disbelief- you can watch They Live and go "Hey, that's Nada" or go "that's the Scorpion King" when Rock's onscreen playing that character, but with Hogan... well, who cares what his character's called? It's HULK HOGAN.

Actually, Rock got the part in MUMMY RETURNS based on his SNL hosting gig. They decided to do a SCORPION KING spin-off because they were impressed with him in the MUMMY sequel. that said, none of this excuses the fact that my parents forced me to watch Stephen Seagal movies that they rented because if I didn't watch with the family, I was being "difficult." Because Stephen Seagal makes Hogan look like fricken Brando. Ironically enough, while Hogan has an ego that is youge, Seagal once claimed to be the reincarnation of Buddah

Well, other than Rocky 3...which now adays isn't that good a movie either, Hollywood really hasn't given a crap about Hulk Hogan. As someone else said, I doubt Hollywood casting agents would look at him and say "Hey, he might make a good Aragorn/Count Dooku/voice of Aslon" and instead probably say "Hulk Hogan? That fake dumb wrestler that only white trash hillbillies watch? Isn't wrestling all fake? We can't have a fake dumb wrestler in our movie!" (forget that 99.9% of all hollywood movies are fake and dumb).
Hogan's HUGE ego certainly doesn't help him in those cases. And I have this feeling that when he tries out for parts, he fully expects the exact same recognition and respect that he gets in the wrestling business...forgetting that a lot of those Hollywood types don't like wrestling.

Let's not forget that The Rock did nothing in Mummy Returns but scream and look big.
