So here's the story:
I first heard about this band through a video on Youtube earlier this year, just a montage of crazy visuals with "Time to Pretend" playing. I liked it. Then I stumbled upon their other two singles "Electric Feel" and "Kids". Again, I liked it. So I kept reminding myself to look more into this band, time after time after time. It wasn't until last night when I finally sat down, relaxed, and decided to look more into their stuff. I started with their first studio album "Oracular Spectacular", and needless to say I was hooked. Then when I was finished with that, I went on to their 2nd and latest album "Congratulations", and that's when everything changed.
My mind was completely blown. It wasn't like anything I've ever heard of before. I kept asking myself "was this really made in 2010? In this generation nonetheless?". Allow me to (try to) describe what their sound is like; think mid to late '60s Beatles, Pink Floyd at their most experimental/trippiest, with a small dash of Led Zeppelin/Queen. I'm not saying this is exactly how they sound like, but it's the best I could describe in words. This is their own sound. I also get a little early '80s synthpop/new wave/goth rock vibe from them with these haunting sounds. This really sounds like something that could have been made in the late '60s or '80s, and it works SO well. And their lyrics are just amazing, I can't put into words. The entire Congratulations album is an amazing, giant mindf*** of epic proportions from beginning to end, not just some songs, but the WHOLE thing.
IMO, they are the greatest real band and musical act in general to come out of this generation. And I don't mean that in a "well because everything else out there today is s*** so this stuff is great by comparison" sort of deal, they really are amazing.
If you're not a big fan of the psychedelic/experimental stuff from the '60s, then this probably isn't for you, although I still suggest on giving them at least a try to see if they effect you in any way. I can proudly say they are my new favorite band from the '00s/'10s.
Anyone else a fan of MGMT? Discuss.
