I know it's mostly samoans but what's the deal with wrestling barefoor?
Is it some kind of ancestory thing?
Was there one wrestler way back that didn't wear boots so others didn't either?
Could the island wrestlers not afford boots and it became tradition?
After the boot question is answered feel free to post about other traditions. The samoan tattoos for one are interesting to me.
Also it was weird seeing Jimy Snuka wear boots on the rare occasion that he did.

It was always weird seeing Kevin Von Erich wrestle barefoot. It must have been a personal preference thing.

I always (kayfabe) thought that the Island wrestlers were "so used to walking around on the beach all day" that they "developed their fighting skills" barefoot, and that carried over into the ring.

Pat Tanaka I always thought wrestled that way because of his martial arts backround although he occassional wore boots

I think Kevin Von Erich said that everyone thought he did it because he was a big Jimmy Snuka fan, but he actually just forgot his boots one day and everyone noticed, so he just stuck with it.

I do martial arts, so wearing shoes when doing anything like that makes me feel really awkward and confined. It's all in the way they're trained, I guess.
I couldn't imagine going barefoot against somebody who was wearing shoes, though... Scary.

Personally I hate it!
I remember when I first started watching wwf (age 7) i remember thinking "why don't they just stamp on the barefoot guy doing the match to beat him easier". Also if I was a wrestler and had to work with someone who wrestled barefoot, kayfabe or not I'd be VERY tempted to stamp on their feet with my big boots!
hahahahaha!

Didn't Bret Hart do a bit where he was stomping on Yoko's toes at WM 9? I might be thinking of the wrong match...

Reminds me of the barefoot deathmatch that Jun Kasai did, where he actually landed feet first n thumbtacks and tried to do a barefoot barbed wire rope walk.

I can't stand barefoot wrestlers. I dunno what it is, but as soon as I see a guy with no shoes on in the ring, I automatically just think "What a chump."
SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC RANT ALERT!
To be honest though, I hate barefoot people in general. Like, I can't stand to see someone walking around outside of their own home with no shoes on. Also, I can't stand dudes in any form of sandals or flip-flops. Women in flip-flops I can deal with, though even then I prefer some form of actual shoe. But when I see a dude in them....I just wanna punch them and tell them to go find their masculinity.
OH MY GOD! At the 2007 Ozzfest, the lead singer from Lamb of God came out to do a song with Hatebreed, and he was wearing bright blue flip-flops...ONSTAGE! DOING METAL MUSIC!
It took everything I had not to rush the stage and beat him senseless. [/end rant]

Same thing for me with KVE it was weird seeing a white guy with no boots.
I also agree about the stomping on the toes. I always thought the same thing.
I believe Bret did stomp on Yokzuna's toes at WM9. If not he did it at some point. I do remember it.
I hate bare feet in general. The only time someone should be bare foot while playing music is the drummer. They have a legit reason. It annoyed me seeing Krist bare foot on dvd's of Nirvana shows. I wanted him to get a splinter so bad.
I have a match to go look up it seems. Would it be on Youtube? It sounds like it might be too violent for that.
I trained Tae Kwon Do and got to do an exhibition for my gym class. I started in shoes and had to take them off. It was too weird.
I like watching the divas do anything in general when it's divas I like.

Islanders wrestle without boots because they don't know how to tie shoelaces.
I wonder why none of the boys would introduce to them zipper boots. Cowboy boots would be out, though. Could you see Afa wearing cowboy boots?

It seemed to work for Super Fly and Kerry Von Erich. The first woman I remember just about always wrestling barefoot was Madusa, and I always thought it was because of her martial arts background. She was hot as all get out, so it did seem to add to her sensuality.

In my short stint in wrestling school, I was wrestling a "scrimmage" after class. I had the ankle wraps on, because I always liked how they looked on Haku. (I'm as white as white can get, so I don't think I could have passed of as an "Islander" any time in my life.) At some point my opponent kicked me straight on, foot-to-foot, and kicked my big toenail backwards into my toe. Dislodged the nail, forcing it into the flesh of my toe.
I've broken fingers, arms, tailbones. I've had a nailgun go off into my thumb, the nail jamming into my thumb joint. I've required stitches many times.
That was the most painful thing ever. And it caused my toe so many infections and I needed two surgeries to fix it (when they removed the nail the first time, part of it broke off, so I had a chunk of nail basically floating in my toe-meat for 3 months or so) I think I wrestled two-three matches after that, couldn't walk without being in severe pain, and just moved on.
So I wouldn't recommend wrestling without boots. That's my 2-cents.

I remember footage of Snuka from the Greatest Wrestling Stars of the 80's dvd of him saying that he first started off in boots but switched to barefoot cause it gives him better grip on the turnbuckle / ropes and he was used to that since he was a kid. Jumping off rocks in Hawaii into the ocean.
