Ive heard that Vince didnt wanna hire Austin and Foley, but J.R got him too...
I pretty much believe this but does anyone actually have any type or source? Or is it just another case of someone typing out someone then that just getting carried around as fact?

JR, for as much crap as he gets he really did a great job under talent relations, signing new wrestlers. Foley and Austin were buddies with JR from way back, where Vince probably thought they were WCW cast offs. So I could beleave this.

Yes, but it was McMahon and his creative team who gave the gimmick to Stone Cold

Not really, both the Stone Cold character and Foley's various persona's were the doing of the individuals themselves. Austin was the "Stone Cold" character as early as his work in ECW. I mean thr whole Attitude era was just copying what Paul Heyman was going, except toned down some.

^^ Which is why they were so successful. The current creative staff needs to realize that.

If I remember correctly Vince McMahon thought Mick Foley looked sleazy. If you pick up a copy of the exellent Have a Nice Day by Mick Foley (available in all good bookstores) he talks of the origins of the mankind character had how had it not been for some out and out honesty by Mick Mankind as we know it may have been just another wrestlecrapper called Mason The Mutalator. Rumour has it creative when asked to think of cold names for Steve Austin came up with such gems as Ice Dagger.

Stone Cold got his gimmick from watchin "The Iceman" Richard Kuklinski who was a hired hitman by the mafia and seen how he acted and adopted some of his traits to his in ring persona. Vince came up with the mankind character but was going to call foley "Mason the Mutilator."

the whole part in Have a Nice Day where mick is describing his dissapoitment of them wanting to call him Mason the mutilator was just absolutley hillarious.

Is it just me, or are WWE's Greatist gimmics the ones that WWE had nothing to do with?

yea most of the great gimmicks of wrestling are the wrestler's personalities themselves but turned way up. (rock, austin, etc) its just another side of their personalities that everyday people relate to. Not voodoo men and vikings.

Look at The Undertaker, though (it seems like he is the one exception to every Wrestlecrap rule). The surefire "turn up a wrestler's personality" formula was questionable in his case. I liked Biker Taker, but he didn't hold a candle to the classic Undertaker.
