My little girl just started grade 6 (wow) and she has math homework. At first I was like "Yeah, of course I'll help you with your homework" Then I looked at it, my next statement was this " well...It's been almost 20 years since I've had to do this so give me a few minutes" It's funny what simple things you forget when you haven't used them in years. I mean it only took me a minute to remember, but the thought of using scrap paper on grade 6 math homework had me laughing.

It's funny, I was only thinking about something similar last night.
I used to love English and writing but now I'm in college I work mostly on computers. I don't write as much as I used to, and I'm less willing to read novels or poetry.
I'm only two years out of secondary school, but because I don't really tax my brain that much anymore I already feel like I'm after becoming more stupid.
Though in reality, I've probably just become lazy.

Math was always my best subject but it's funny how little we use some of these"skills" as we get older. I actually had to draw a chart of where the tens, hundreds, thousands etc places were. I also didn't realize how hard it would be to teach it to someone who doesn't understand.

You think that's bad? Every so often I forget how to do a capital cursive letter when I'm writing a note.

Math sucks. Thank god for calculators (and Google's calculator feature in particular).

yeah the calculators have become my friend over the years. I was never that good at math. Which is bad because I work with cash all the time.

Math has always been my best subject at school. And I am still very good with it today. I remember someone on this forum posting some calculus problems and I felt like such a nerd explaining it to him.

but times change, there's a lot less expected of kids these days. Fixed, based off my personal experience teaching at a nearby middle school for the past year.

To me math was a love-hate relationship. The math I liked was something I could see or relate to. In college I barely squeaked by Pre-Cal 1 and most of it was problems with graphing and what not. However Pre-Cal 2 I got a B in and most of it dealt with trig and geometry.

I found that I was able to do most geometry pretty easily, while I struggled more with algebra, pre cal and chemistry math.

I am reminded of an article my brother showed me involving school work for 8th graders from the late 19th/early 20th century. Most college students today would be hard pressed to pass that stuff. Edit: Here it is. --> www.barefootsworld.net/1895finalexam.html

I was always awesome at the big 4 (math, English, science and history), but history was my favorite and math was my best. They had to move me up (my math course) in my 9th grade year and again in 10th because I was that damn good. But Trigonometry........ f*** TRIGONOMETRY!
