Seriously??? I was at work today and a customer wanted to know who to make the check out to? Part of me wanted to just say my name, but I reminded her where she was? So, she asked again and I had to tell her that she makes it to Big Lots, the name of the store she was shopping at? The bad thing is this wasn't an old woman or anything, maybe 30's tops. She held a perfect conversation with me the whole time at the register and everything.

Some people don't think you can make personal checks out to business names (I guess).

Seriously, why do retail estrablisments still take checks? The only real logical reason I can fathom is the elderly and baby boomers who are so stuck in their ways that they refuse to use debit cards despite the fact they work the same and are alot quicker. To me checks should only be used for bills, and with BIG purchases like the down payment on a house or a car. There is no need to inconvenience a line full of people because you wanna write a check for 3.98. Thats just my opinion though, maybe some people LOVE showing their ID on every purchase, and watching cashiers taking the time to write their info onto the check and then processing it. You can sure tell I'm in the grocery industy can you?

If people are so adamant about using checks, then there should be a minimum on how low they can be. Say if someone wants to write a check, the purchase amount has to be at least 25 dollars, or something along those lines. Just anything to get people weened off them. Plus, its so much easier to commit fraud with checks.

You can sure tell I'm in the grocery industy can you? Well, you don't want to anger your clients. Around here, farmers still go in a good bit and buy stuff with checks if it's a large purchase as they don't want to carry cash or have interest in debit cards. Sure, they may be stuck in their ways but money is money. I've never seen anyone leave a cart of groceries or whatever over someone paying for groceries. (I have, however, annoyed women behind me in lines when I pulled out a handful of coupons.) And writing a check usually takes about the same time as paying in cash if you decide to pay with the closest amount you have. (Which I do some.) Which is what baffles me is the amount of cashiers these days who look dumbfounded when you hand them close to exact change. Like for instance, a five and a quarter for a bill that's $3.22. (Which is something I learned from my grandfather.) Especially when all they have to do is punch in $5.25 as the amount paid and it'll tell them how much change to give back. Then again, I've been to stores on occassion when the power was out and it's usually hilarious.

As for the power being out, in a situation like that, its cash only, and since there is no power, its being done on calculators, and its a complete nightmare. Plus anyone not paying in cash has to put all their stuff back.

We lost power a few weeks ago, and just told everyone to get out (nicely of course). But, thats our companies policy on that, or at least I was told. Good thing the store wasn't really crowded. Everyone just left their shopping carts where they were. The power stayed out for the rest of that day, and everyone just came back the next morning to finish shopping and checking out.

Where I work we've had people try to give us blank checks. They pass them to us signed, but nothing filled in. We have to tell them to fill it out. Believe me, I've been tempted to put my name on them.

Believe me, I've been tempted to put my name on them. There are actually a few stores where, to save time, they automatically fill out the rest of the info on a signed check. They also get the check back, since they send in the image of the check instead of the check itself.

Seriously, why do retail estrablisments still take checks? The same could be asked of why they still hire cashiers. ;-) The Answer is the same, the customer prefers it.
