Since when do you have to download the games? I purchased Saints Row 2 yesterday for $3.00, and there is a disc in the box, but yet it is making me download the game from Steam. I am new to PC gaming or at least buying PC games at retail. At 15 GB this is gonna be one big download.

Don't feel bad. I bought Mafia 2 for $50 about 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to play it once. First, Steam kept trying to update itself but kept restarting at random times. Finally got that fixed, installed the game...and found out that the disc only installs 98% of the game. The remaining 97 mb has to be downloaded over Steam. This is a problem on 2 fronts: being in a rural area, I'm currently stuck with dial up, and the connection to the Steam server is so bad that I've yet to see the download hit 10 kb/s. Then I couldn't Steam to connect at all. Finally got that sorted out, and got the downloaded amount up to 20 mb. Or so I thought. The next day, I logged into steam, and it was showing it at 5 mb.
I will never purchase another game that uses Steam. Ever.

The extent of my PC gaming was Civilization II, for the most part. Since that doesn't want to work with Vista 64, it's consoles for me.

It's all part of the DRM "conspiracy".....since it's infinitely easier to pirate PC games than console games they have you authenticate a game online to ensure that you have a real copy.
And welcome to PC gaming..... Welcome to:
Pros - Endless User created Mods for big games
- A better FPS experience overall
- Longer shelf life for software and required upgrades
Cons:
- Shovelware by the barrelfull
- REQUIRED patches for game stability
- Problems more complicated than "Red Rings", "Yellow Lights", and scratched discs
- Graphics Whores ruining the industry by requiring high-end PCs to play at anything but a lower resolution than advertised
- Aimbots, Spambots, Griefers, Bad Mods, Porno Sparays, and being called a "fag" or equivilent in 15 different languages

I feel like I should love user created mods, but for whatever reason I install them, and just feel like....like I am somehow tarnishing the game, even if the mods are really great quality.

Okay well, the game finally downloaded. I figured I'd try to get my gamepad to work with it, no such luck. Is there a specific gamepad/controller that I need to get. It requires two axis for movement and two for camera, I just can't seem to figure this crap out. The keyboard layout is pure garbage. The game was only 3 bucks so its not a total loss.

I was actually quite surprised when I bought a retail copy of Mafia II and Steam started downloading stuff (I haven't bought a physical copy of a newly released PC game in years, I'm all about digital downloading but in this case I got Mafia II cheaper from GameStop), but I've never really had any problems with Steam. I can see how that would piss off those who are still stuck with dial up for whatever reason, though. Oh yeah, for those of you looking for a game pad for the PC, you can't go wrong with the Xbox 360 controller. A lot of games these days support it without any extra setup necessary.

A lot of this anti-piracy stuff is a major PITA. For instance I bought one game that had some type of security feature that anytime I tried to run the game it would say to insert the original disc and not a copy. The problem was, that I had the original disc in there. Checking online I found out it had to do with some type of anti-piracy program. After digging further I found out that in order for the game to work you could not have any CD or DVD burning software installed. I e-mailed the company and never got an answer and I was not about to remove my burning programs. Also since I had opened it returning it was not an option either.
On the official forums for this game others were having the same problems and was asking for the logical thing a no-disc patch. The mods though were banning people for doing so since apparently no-disc patches are illegal even though you own the game. Nor was the company offering any other advice but "remove your burning programs".
The impression the company left me was that it was okay for them to rip me off $30, but I could not ask for something so I could play a game I bought legally.

Yeah, controlers have pretty much been "SNES+ L/R 2+Rumble" for the last ten years.

Yeah, controlers have pretty much been "SNES+ L/R 2+Rumble" for the last ten years. What they need to do for the next PS/Xbox is replace the right thumbstick with a trackball. Trackballs can be just as accurate as a mouse with practice. The main reason I hate playing shooter-type games on consoles is because using an thumbstick to aim is total ass.

Well, there is that C button on the game cube controler. But I know what you mean. Look up how Smash TV was played on the NES some day.
