To be fair there really weren't any free agents out there that WCW could use. Why they didn't just use someone already under contract I have no idea. Well at least it wasn't David Arquette. Takes off the mask, he was in on it, then gets beat down by Steiner and Jarrett.

Or someone from ECW that hadn't already left like RVD or Rhino. IIRC Van Dam was going to join WCW once Eric Bischoff/Fusient took over. Bischoff had already spoken with him and they had come to an informal agreement.

Well wasn't Animal a last minute replacement idea? Hawk was going to join him later on, but I was glad to see him. I didn't think he was past his prime so much because he destroyed one of the luchadors in a tag match a couple weeks later. I know it was a luchador, but still, he looked dominate

I forgot who explained the whole mystery man idea -- if the mystery man being hyped was a big name, they'd hype them on the marquee to get more tickets sold.
If there is no faith in the man, they will bill him as a 'mystery man' or opponent to get people interested.
Was probably from a Cornette interview, but he explained this away for the Road Warrior Animal and past-his-prime Jimmy Snuka reveals.

from what I remember, they had actually signed one of the remaining ECW big name guys forget who. Sabu was supposed to join at some point, but Paul E. threw a big hissy fit, and Sabu just went to the indies. But I think Sabu was earlier in 2000.
Anyways, I think the same thing happened, either Paul E threw a hissy fit, or the ECW guy backed out for another reason.

It was always going to be Animal. The reveal was pretty stupid, and bringing him in for a world title match was a dumb ass idea, and the finish was absolutely retarded because of Sid's leg breaking, but hey, that whole segment was comedy gold. f***ing Road Warrior Animal being treated like a huge pick up for the company. It was marvelous.
