So I was at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago on Friday and decided to sit down for a minute while other members of my family were still looking at some stuff.
This teenage kid sits next to me and I notice he's wearing The Miz's chkick magnent shirt.
At first I was going to throw out some "Dude you must be awesome!" but decided to play it cool and ask him if that was a Miz shirt. He said "I don't know. It could be." Then I asked if he watched wrestling and he said he did a little bit. I said it looked like a shirt The Miz used to wear and he had to look down at the shirt to see what he was wearing. Seriously. This is why I don't talk to people in public. This ever happen to anyone else?

Eh, I wear shirts that I know nothing about all the time. I shop at Goodwill. I just don't see the need in wasting money on expensive clothes.

I know that some hipsters have taken to wearing vintage (or fake vintage) wrestling t-shirts of superstars from the 80's.

I had a ton of people offer to buy my bWo shirt when I was wearing it. Some were wrestling fans, but others were just guys named Steve. On a side note, though, the shirt got a thumbs-up from Matt Sharp at a Weezer concert.

I wasn't sure if the band's knowledge of wrestling extended beyond someone's glimpse at a mid-90s Apter mag ("Watching Grunge leg drop New Jack through a press table...").

I didn't know that was trendy.

I know that nWo shirts were big back in the day, and you'd often see a lot of non-fans wearing them, many of whom had no clue there was any wrestling connection whatsoever. Hell, I still sometimes see people wearing them over a decade later.

But seriously, I used to wear shirts that a buddy would get me from the fflea market (I was working in the junkyard at the time and would go through them) and one was a Firefighters shirt. I kept wearing it when I was working retail and guys would be like "Hey Brother" to me all the time cause they were firefighters/ems guys from different areas.

Let's start a trend of wearing firefighters shirts and calling people brother. Want to? Please say no. That's cool though and at least you knew what you were wearing.

I still wear my Austin 3:16 and Purple Macho Man shirt every now and again, even in Public. No one would think of me as a Wrestling Fan unless they saw me sport the shirt, but for those two, I do proudly...

There's a picture somewhere of Matt Bellamy from Muse with a Prince Devitt shirt, but for all I know, he could be a fan.

I once read how some people bought those Jeff Hardy shirts with that one symbol and some weren't fans. Some thought that his design was just too cool or something.

nWo and The Rock had their stuff all over the place back in the Attitude era. They superseded wrestling fandom. The Rock was just so popular that everyone knew him. The old wrestling axiom that the best big name/top babyface was the guy that all the guys wanted to hang out with and the guy all the women wanted to sleep with? That was The Rock. So that era kind of made sense.
The hipster thing nowadays has happened for a few reasons: 1) "The Wrestler" - cult figure Mickey Rourke in art-house movie about wrestling 2) Joel McHale on The Soup using WWE footage such as Naked Oily Grunting Guys 3) the general hipster irony trope, where everything that is bad is "yeah, that's good"
perfect storm.

A t-shirt's just a t-shirt, generally people choose to wear certain t-shirts because they like the way they look as opposed to understanding the significance of what they're representing. The proliferation of Led Zep t-shirts worn by 15 year olds is an example.

You can walk into an Urban Outfitter right now and purchase an Ultimate Warrior t-shirt during his neon and hairspray phase. But don't tell the cashier that you're a wrestling fan because that would make you really lame.
