Around 1986-1988 it seemed like a major card didn't go by without there being a scaffold match of some sort. I don't understand why Crockett or Dusty or whoever was booking them liked them so much. They have to be some of the most boring matches, as most of the time the guys are just trying to keep their balance up there.
Not only were they boring, but they were super dangerous(just ask Cornette.) I've been watching different events from 1988, and they were hyping The Road Warriors/Powers of Pain scaffold match for The Great American Bash, which I understand never happened and drove the Powers of Pain to the WWF.
Scaffold matches were one of those high risk no reward ideas that just makes no sense to me.
What do you guys think?

People will pay to see a guy fall. Its a gimmick just one of the more dangerous ones.

I can honestly say I have never enjoyed a scaffold match. Too much risk, too little reward. Its almost a little awkward to even watch one.

It's not even satisfying. Seeing a guy go through a table is at least kind of neat. Watching him practically on the verge of tears dropping down below, and the awkward fall, basically just makes me wonder what moron booked the first one, and why it took so long for the match to die out.

TNA tried to bring it back. I would really like to know why especially in a stupid throw away feud between AJ and Rhyno

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the scaffold match was the brainchild of Jerry Jarrett in either Louisville or Memphis, which also explains why TNA tried to bring it back a while back.

I remember them being over as hell for a while. No matter how bad the matches were it was the anticipation of one guy falling. You gotta remember that this was waaaay before triple table falls and exploding rings. This was as high risk as it could get. WCCW had a few that made the loop in my childhood and I always watched them with my hands near my eyes cause I was afraid of a babyface taking the plunge

I enjoyed the Brian Lee Vs Tommy Dreamer scaffold match which ECW hyped as "High Incident". Loved Brian Lee's bump when he fell from the scaffold onto three tables and the crowd went berserk. I guess its the only scaffold match which ECW booked.

The Night of the Skywalkers had me excited, but after that it was like "been there, done that." My friend Ed gets picked on b/c of his love of scaffold matches. As a matter of fact, he and my friend Matt are bringing over a Starrcade dvd on Sat. that includes a scaffold match.

I didn't even think the TNA scaffold match was all that great either. Given how limited the matches have to be when they're up there, the matches just aren't that entertaining at all. But I can understand that at the time given that there weren't the crazy bumps we're used to, that it would have been an attraction.

I always bought into them. I guess I only saw two(Road Warriors/Midnight Express, and The Rock'N'Roll Express/Midnight Express) and they didn't really last that long. I hate that there were some legit injuries from them but I did enjoy the matches themselves. They were like a step up from a steel cage as far as settling the score was concerned.

Bill Dundee and Koko B. Ware had one of the first scaffold matches ever in Memphis.

Bill Dundee and Koko B. Ware had one of the first scaffold matches ever in Memphis. Heres a video of the first one ever. Between Jerry Jarrett and apparently Don Greene

I guess its the only scaffold match which ECW booked. In the Rise and Fall dvd there is footage of who I believe to be JT Smith taking a fall off a scaffold but this was before they became Extreme Championship Wrestling
